Avedis MA5 (no affiliation) is one of the best sounding pres in the world. Ingenious design, top shelf manufacturing, world class customer service. There is no substitute, Neve-style or other.

I've been really curious about the MA5 for a while. The description of the mids sounds like it might be something I'm after on vocals. Gonna have to check eBay to see if I can get a few $$ off the new price.

Using Avedis' own Line-Z pad we test many preamps over here to compare them directly. The MA5 is also tested, and having used it live as well I can assure you the differences in our clips follow what you hear live.

Awesome.

haha nothing wrong with loving a product man!
Honestly, you have almost singlehandedly made me want an ma5
Badly. I'll be shocked if I don't wind up getting one
In the next couple years. Just gotta get the fearn vt1 first! And then
A couple mics.... And new converters lol

Wow! long list of stuff..true slutz,uh?!
The fearn looks also intriguing indeed..

Yes, you definitely should at least try an MA5..ask a dealer or somebody who has one..it's not even expensive all considered... It's one of the things that changed my perspective on how gear should be made..

Take care and enjoy the music!

Worst preamp ever made?
Hands down the hideous and despicable Neve 1073 - I hate the thing I wish it would die.
DIE DIE DIE.

I go to almost any thread trying to actually LEARN something about a PROFESSIONAL and EXTREMELY WELL MADE piece of gear which would be a BENEFIT to almost anyone's signal chain... and all I see is all this 1073 garbage. EVERYWHERE - Jesus Christ - could we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET A LIFE? I mean seriously. REALLY SERIOUSLY.

There is absolutely no way in hell earth or heaven that any one preamp is worth 5x as much as another high quality professionally made preamp (like the MA5 which I came here to read about) so much so that it is 5x better sounding and is responsible for millions of hours of idiotic postings and postulating. Also responsible for derailing any useful conversation about what might be WORTH KNOWING about a specific item in question - this thread is titled 'What does the Avedis MA5 sound like?' - I found it through a google search because I was interested in what people had to say about - yep you guessed it - THE AVEDIS MA5.

Many of you should be very very ashamed of yourselves. I hate the 1073. I will never own one (I can afford it but refuse - what an idiotic WASTE OF MONEY). I don't care if anything I audition or buy has any 'similar' qualities. What the hell are you guys recording with these things anyways? Some sort of scientific measurement analysis of audio circuit performance? I actually record MUSIC and have found that with GOOD MUSICIANS and GOOD PERFORMANCES --- ALMOST ALL professional pieces of gear work JUST FINE.

KILL ALL 1073's and all people who worship them.
UGH - double UGH.
People who are offended THANK YOU - I have hit my target and YOU ARE IDIOTS.
Go ahead and hop on in and defend all your 1073 BS about how its so venerated and important - its a benchmark against which others are measured and you have golden ears and are a high end professional and its your job to be an expert in the nuances... and go tell it to a tree while you are at it you are making a fool of yourself.

I will not return to this thread to read your idiotic reply - I will be busy making music with lovely affordable preamps which sound heavenly. Maybe someone will chime in with actual experience with an MA5 and some USEFUL opinions about what it sounds like: good, bad, taste, nuance, opinion, preference, maybe comparing it to SOME OTHER preamp? Everyone knows its not a 1073 Avedis himself said so IN THIS THREAD - OK? MOVE ON! Maybe someone would like to know what you think it sounds like compared with... I dunno.... Shadow Hills? Vintech? BAE? API? Portico? Great River? Grace? Millenia? HINT: These are all similarly priced units which someone might be interested in owning FOR USE AS A PREAMP. These are the actual units which a prospective MA5 owner might be also considering....

Are you people with those idiotic posts actually adults? You should get mommy or daddys permission before using their computer. Hopelessly disgusted - YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES.

I have pristine vintage 1084's and a Neve 1073 LB. They do not sound anything alike. Comparing new gear to old gear is always a waste of time. I don't really like the LB and can't wait to unload it and pick up an MA5!!!

Seriously crazy thread tho.

The MA5’s sound fabulous.

I have not had my pair next to a vintage discrete Neve or modern AMS Neve module, so I cannot comment on a direct comparison.

I will say that next to the Dakings, CAPI VP 26’s and the Neve 34128’s in my console, the MA5’s are right there in the same class.
They are slightly thicker than any of the above mentioned and have a very pleasant, smooth top end.

All have a slightly different flavor and all can produce high quality results when paired with great microphones.

If you want a pre amp that sounds good on anything, an MA5 is a viable option.

I haven't had a lot of good preamps before the MA5's, but yeah they're good on everything! There's nothing I've run through them that wasn't improved by going through the MA5s. I kinda want to get more!!

My Recordings/Credits

I've had a ton of different brands of 500 series preamps. I sold them all and bought 16 channels of MA5's now I'm happy and broke lol! Worth every penny!

Its a professional tool for the right situation and source. Your source, your ears, your opinion, your room, your wallet, your pimp, your mic, your entire chain/environment will inform you to buy, keep or reach for the Ma5 or the 1073LB. So if you can afford to have them both, I say have both because they are slight different shades of Neve Blue. Some may prefer painting with a lot of colors, some like just using a lead pencil. The artist and his mind makes the biggest impact
If you ever get bored of engineering, you should give writing a shot.
Well said
