and a damn nice guy, and so is his engineer, Adam Samuel. If I were looking to buy an old Neve, this is one I be seriously looking at, and these would be the guys to buy one from.

My $0.02.

I'm a big fan of Daniel's work. That Neve is a true beauty. I wonder what console he's going to be using now?

Looks like a Paradigm passive consumer speaker (Canadian speaker manufacturer).

I know he's got 1 or 2 API's and another Neve, a VR I think. Plus he's got like 20 BCM-10's and Melbourns. His last record was done completely on those, I believe.

I had a chance to work at his old place in New Orleans about 6 years ago. (Kingsway) which had a big API from the Record Plant in New York. Not only one of the most inspiring and coolest looking places I have ever seen but also the most original. In the mix I used every downstairs space as some form of chamber and each one had its own beautiful distinct tone. But enough of the vibe the one thing that I still fight after working there is the SOUND. Oh my god. The console had 560's on every channel and sounded unlike anything before or since. They also had a Neve Melbourne and 8 channels of either 1081 or 1073 racked up. That coupled with the mic selection made for one amazing week of tones. All that and the assistants said that he had just come down the week before and picked up a bunch of gear he needed for his other studio he had in Oxnard. Unbelievable experience and it really drove home the whole "Comfortable surroundings inspire great performances" idea. Its amazing that my rack of API's doesn't sound the same. It says alot about that room and the way it was put together. Whenever I feel a bit full of myself I just pull out those sessions and listen to the tones and the musicians and it humbles me right out.
Now the real question is how many banks do I have to rob to buy the console. Oh yeah and can I use it when I am in prison?

Our studio is managed by the same ladies that managed Kingsway. Great gals.

We actually have, in one of our rooms, some of the carpeting from Kingsway. Although, my partner and I have since steam cleaned all the mojo right out of it.

The women who were in charge of Kingsway could not have been more helpful. I always wondered what happened to the crew that worked there and I am glad to see that some of them have found continued sucess. They were amazing. I don't think you could have steam cleaned the Mojo out of those carpets. I am very into collecting photography and it blew me away when I was being shown the studio all the great photographs and antiques that made the place have such a great vibe. Was it funky? YES, but in the coolest way. You never felt up tight in that space. I always felt like whatever old spirits haunted that house loved music and wanted people to make the best possible.
This leads me to a new topic. Since he took everthing out and sold the house, what has happened to it. Is it being used as a business? Or is it somebodys residence?
Oh what a great time I had, Oh no I feel a tear welling up I must go......

Re: Daniel Lanois

SAD! . . . I believe that was the console that was in Triclops in Atlanta. Lanois bought it a long time back. I'll hate to see him lose that sound.

Hey Michael,

IIRC, Kingsway eventually became a bed and breakfast. I could be wrong though. These old building get renovated and sold every day. Propery tax is ridiculous here.

When Lanois sold the place and moved to Silverlake, the managers (Karen Bradey and Georgia Graham) were left with no studio. Upon this realization they decided to persue a new facilty. I always found it to be a bit perplexing, because one would assume, that they would just move on and find some other line of work. Not these ladies. They were determined to have a studio. They finally, scooped up four double shotgun houses and renovated all of them. Three of which are rentals and one is the studio where I am a partner. The place is great and you're right, the vibe is undeniable.

A better one than the one he is selling.

Stewart,
Just another reason why the place worked so well. Anytime somebody puts true love and attention into something it always comes off well done. I am glad that they are still pushing forward. I have had the chance to work a little bit in New Orleans both at Kingsway and at American Sector when it was open. It always amazed me that that city has so much vibe and such cool recording spaces but still always seems to have such a struggle making the studio scene work. Like you said, If property taxes or rent or prices are so high then in this tough world of studio economics it just doesn't add up. I am just glad that there are still people willing to try. I will look you up next time I come to town and I would love to see your place.

Tell the "Girls" to keep on pushing forward. I love people who don't give up on a dream.
