How can I make Pacifica and RNC work together?

Pacifica has high impedance outputs and RNC has low impedance ins-outs. Any ideas?

Um, I think you're mixed up.

IF I've got this right...The Pacifica (like any mic pre) should have balanced XLR outs. The RNC, in order to be configuarble with both "consumer" and "pro" gear, I believe, was designed with unbalanced connectors. In practice, there shouldn't be a problem interfacing them, provided you have the right cables. If the cable runs between the units are short (and they should be, if they're racked anywhere near each other), you should be able to send a line-level signal from your Pacifica to your RNC and on to your converter (and DAW), or wherever, without much difficulty.

I don't remember whether the Pacifica has an insert point (like the Great River or the RNP) which would be even better in this application.

You should check out the FMR site; there's lots of information there (and in the RNC manual) about interfacing the RNC with all sorts of gear. Or send them an email. They're very accessible and helpful.

Thank you for the reply.

I can see in the RNC manual this:

Hooking up the RNC to balanced lines with TRS 1/4'' plugs will not work! If
the equipment you are connecting the RNC to is balanced, you must
first unbalance it and only connect into the RNC with TS 1/4'' plugs.

So can someone "unbalance" a balanced signal?

yo man I had the same issue just last week, I tried to hook it up to the pacifica with balanced inputs and the sound came out really whack. I called fmr audio and they gave me the low down basically to make it simple.. you cable has to be to be unbalanced on the trs side and balanced on the xlr side....go to guitar center and ask them....and if they act like they don't know what you mean tell them to go to fmraudio.com.... I tried to get mogami but, they dont make em that way...(unless you want to re wire them)

Or I think you can just use a short as possible Hi Z XLR to 1/4" phone mono mic cable....

I don't think impedence has anything to do with this. The issue is connecting the balanced outs of the Pacifica into the unbalanced inputs of the RNC. Both of these peices run at +4, so with the right cables it's not an issue. The FMR site recommeneds Hossa xlr to unbalanced TS cables, which you can find very easily. I use these cables to hook my Hamptone JFET to my RNC and have never had any problems.

According to FMR, the fact that the Pacifica is transformer balanced allows this to work without compromise. They recomend using differenent cables for servo and electrically balanced gear.
