Building: DIY Active Monitors for $1000

I am contemplating building studio monitors for myself. They have to be active, as I don't have an amp, and don't want the hassle.
How hard would it be? I have a variety of tools and the enclosure would be easiest as I can do woodwork. I can imagine the rest is only soldering and screwing?
Will I get bigger bang for buck if I build them myself or if I buy some Dynaudio's for $1000?
Thanks.

If you build active monitors, you will have to buy an amp. You might need two per cab unless you can find a two channel amp with internal DSP. I don't see how it is a hassle to have passives with a crossover designed for the kit.

Hey, i dont think speakers would be that hard. if you can find yourself a good crossover, and source some good drivers you sould be right.

check out the JLMAUDIO.com forums. he has a 60 watt amp there you can buy off him so you can get a couple and mono bridge them and get 120watts. im not really to sure about this stuff but i guess you would need 2 for each, tweeter and woofer, for 120watt bi-amp.

So essentially it would be easier to build passive monitors instead of active...?

It would be even easier to buy them.Considing the design and technical aspects that go into building a true reference monitor.

True, but I'm up for it. But where does one start?
should I look into 'kits'? or buy everything separate?

Yes I have researched there but I don't know which are monitors and which are loudspeaker kits! It's a pretty bad website, but the kits I seen were nice.

Is madisound the only place that does kits?

Cheers.

JLM AUDIO :: View topic - AMP

QUOTE about the amp kit, why it is a great sounding DIY amp.:-It is just a LM3886TF which is fully insulated all over so requires no mica insulation kit. But the trick is in the circuit as it allows for balanced input and volume control with no extra IC's and keeps the LM3886 stable in all conditions. The LM3886 oscillates below the gain of 10 so the normal way to balance a LM3886 works fine until you unplug the input and then it goes supersonic oscillation at full power which tweeters don't like.

The number $2000+ Amps I have seen with the LM3886 chip in them these days is huge.

if you wanna build speakers i think all you need is
1-the enclosure
2-crossover, 1 per speaker which are like $30
3-JLM amps
4-power supply 25VAC
5-wire
6-soldering iron
7-some very good speakers

QUOTE-jlm forums
So, quality wise, this would not be out of place pushing a pricey set of speakers for some high quality sound, yes? I see plenty of chip amps getting around these days, all with good figures/specs.

The LM3886 amp is good and would take a lot more $ to get a small percentage better. Still the largest percent of error is in speakers themselves.

i hope i made some sence here
GL with it all
