Thread Starter | 5.1 dubbing stage vs. stereo mixing
we're in a situation where we may be able to get some pretty hefty 5.1 business but my main focus is music so i'm wondering if making a one room facility for both is practical or even possible, if big monitors are also in the plans for stereo mixing. i understand you need spkrs to be at a minimum of 5 meters from the AE in a dubbing stage, so i'm wondering if it would it be possible/practical to make a room optimized for both post and stereo mixing, including big monitors for stereo - i haven't been able to find a place that accomodates both in the same space. checked skysound, abbey road, disney, warners, etc. if you could get a way with nearfields for stereo i imagine there wouldn't be a problem, but if you also want big mons for stereo... has anyone here dealt with this? hope the question wasn't too vague.thank you. |

We do 5.1 and stereo and have no problems. We have four monitoring systems, two of which can be stereo or 5.1. Mix options are done at the desk. 5m? For THX certified rooms, yes, but ordinary 5.1 for TV should just simulate a living room, albeit with good speakers.

Maybe post this in the Post Production forum - you're bound to get some well qualified answers. AFAIK, the nature of the 5.1 work you might be getting pretty much determines the setup of your room. If the spec sheet for the project demands that the muisic/sound HAS to be Dolby / THX certified (often the case for film, even indie/festival stuff these days), then your studio also HAS to be THX/Dolby certified - no two ways about it. Maybe give those companies a ring to get a fuller picture? |

maybe it just isn't possible and i'd have to settle for nearfileds only when doing stereo, which would be a bummer... or make a smaller stereo and 5.1 room, kissing off the THX business, which would also be a bummer. i thought about that after posting here. i'll wait to see if i get more answers before taking up any more bandwidth with this. thanks though. | |
