Mixing services seriously needed. . .

Hi all. . .

Sadly, I reached the limits of my incompetence some time ago. I'm now looking at a bunch of tracks (some of which feature truly brilliant lead guitar solos. . . not by me, by the way) on ten songs that need to be mixed into something special. . . or, at least. . . as special as they can be made given the fact that I recorded the tracks. I'm looking for a Boston-esque (the band. . . not the city!) type sound specialist.

I would like to send one or two people the raw tracks to one of my songs to fix up and mix for me and otherwise improve beyond my abilities. You'll have my best attempt at a mix to start from to give you a very rough idea of what I was thinking, but I know there is a lot that can be done that I 1) don't know how to do, and/or 2) don't have the gear to do it with (more 1 than 2).

My CD will feature ten songs, so the person involved will have a CD's worth of music to work on eventually.

Of course, I'm looking for someone who's capable of giving me some great results, but I'm also not looking to pay an arm and a leg for this work, either. (I already gave both arms and both legs to the studio venture.)

Due to the unique nature of this venture and the marketing "genius" behind it (me!), I do suspect that it will get some rather significant media coverage after release. At least, that's the hope. :-)

Anyway, I am very much looking forward to hearing from people who can really take me to Boston (Tom Scholz, please apply).

Please send me an email or a PM.

Thank you very much.

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

I'm interested in the job. I'running a studio since a couple of years now and I think we don't have to go through the technical equipment in detail. Let me just say there's everything needed to get a seriously professsional mix AND mastering.

So here my offer: Send me the data of one of the songs and let me do the mix. In case you like it we go on with the other tracks. In case you are not satisfied you won't see an invoice!

Let me know what you think,

best,

Fabian

I actually like this idea of a mix off. . . I think.

Do you suppose folks would actually be interested in giving this a shot???

And, honestly, what would be the disadvantages for me. . . the "starving" recording artist? (I mean, I don't want these mixes ending up on iTunes or something. That's what I intended to do the "official" mixes.

Any thoughts???

Stephen

BTW, I appreciate all of the kind PMs and emails in response to my original post. I just want to get that sound. . . you know. . . it's the same one all of you strive for. . . the one that is stuck in your head!

it's allways funny to hear the same song mixed by different people - I kinda like the experience - allways very educational

it seems like everytime there's a of mix-off on this site it degenerates into the equivilent of monkeys slinging poo at each other.

this one was classic! got real ugly several pages in.
******//www.gearslutz.com/board/so-mu...ldruglord.html

or the infamous ever expandling deadline of the slydrums metalcore mix with 400 people submitting 40 versions each mix.
******//www.gearslutz.com/board/good-...x-contest.html

plus there's also several offshoots of each thread & those are just the ones that come to mind first.

if this project is that important to you why put yourself through that kind of bullcrap if you don't have to? rather then sorting through 500 amature boxy and uninteresting mixes save the hassle and hire someone who's great at mixing and it's their day job. john paterno, jay kahrs, kenny goia...they'd all do a good job i think.

for the record i'm not even interested in this one. i work solely on metal, hardcore, stoner rock & other heavy music. something that sounds like boston? i enjoyed living in cambridge proper almost 10 years ago but it's not my bag!

Many thanks for all who applied for the job. I have identified the people I am interested in beginning discussions with regarding the mixing of this project and will be sending emails to them in the next day or so. I have received enough comments from people discouraging a "mix off" that I'm nixing that idea right now.

None the less, I am very encouraged by the feedback I've received and am looking forward to moving on to the next stage of this project.

Thanks again for everyone who wrote. Like I said, I'll be sending out "invitation" emails in the next couple of days.

may I ask: what's the problem with the mix off?

nobody has to take part in those pissing contests but to listen and discuss different ideas could be rewarding.
At the end of the day it's all about taste anyway.

I guess, in the final analysis, it didn't make a lot of sense for me, and I certainly didn't want to cause problems for anyone else.

PLUS, it would also mean loads of "bootleg" copies of one of my songs running around all over the net. That didn't seem like a real positive.

But, in theory, I absolutely believe in the principle. After all, I'm a free-market economist!

Thanks again for everyone who has volunteered to help.

Like I said, I'll be writing folks later in the week.

Don't want to inject a 'duh' moment but in doing the mix off - why give everyone full copies of the songs?

You could simply do the intro into the 1st verse, then maybe slice off a piece of the chorus from somewhere. You could do 30 seconds of audio total from the song, and no one would be able to really steal your song or hear it entirely, but you'd get a damn good idea of what the different mixes and sonic quality would sound like on different peoples setups, with their talent, in their rooms, etc.

Stephen I just wanted to make sure you got my two PM's.

I agree that a 30 second clip would probably be the best way to go with such a thing as a "Mixoff"

But I also think time and attention to detail are factors, and I know that Palisade can provide both in spades since we normally handle mixing for projects more than any other facet of engineering.

Lastly I don't think letting different people have different takes can hurt, you might even get multiple mix idea's you like this way no matter who you eventually settle on that help with the overall tonality of the project.

Plus you make some new friends. *Shrug*

I think the obvious problem with a "30 second" competition is it takes away the most important aspects of a mix: development, surprise, motion, etc. The bridge, for instance, if there is one, wouldn't be included, and the bridge offers an opportunity to put a completely different mix upon the material, that nonetheless works.

Lots of people these days can get various parts to sit together nicely. But where does the mix take you?

Agreed... I'm sitting here thinking, "what are the chances this turns into anything but a pissing match". Probably zero.

If you are serious about having your work professionally mixed, find your self one good engineer and work with him to get the exact sound you are looking for.

there were many mix offs that didn't turn into pissing matches - but yes none of those were on GS
