| I talked to Mike at ATR today and he suggested checking out the new tape. Made in the good ol' USA. I'm so glad they made it happen. If their product is good, I will be giving them some business. ![]() |

| the RMG is better and better they just need new boxes the boxes are quite shitty the tape is very quiet and has a great hi end thing - hard to describe....very different from quantegy. i have a reel of atr 1/2" - i have not tried it yet.... i have used many reels of rmg 900 1/2"..... sounds great i can't wait to hear the atr 2" i just bought a second A827... 2 x 2" 16 track 2 x 2" 8 track these are both very hi-fi options thank god for mike spitz thank god for all the kids who hear tape right now and who are really passionate and really play and sing - they are the future of music - there are some tracking live to 2" 8 track right now as i write this be well - jack |

| So if RMG is based on 911, is ATR an enhanced GP-9 type formula? Just wondering, I heard a rumor. |

900 / 911 i think the atr tape will be available in 1/4" soon 89$ is steep for 1/2" $289 is steep for 2" but, it is supposed to be incredible tape, perhaps the best ever made i have made a few records this summer with old ampex one pass tape, and when tape is well made - it has a longer shelf life than many, many things - it is truly durable, amazing that it can do what it does 10 or 12 years later be well - jack

| it seems expensive but in the 80's 456 was $150 for a reel a les paul was $800. Now tape is $275 and Les pauls are $2000 I don't think thats bad at all considering inflation and the fact that there isn't too much demand for tape these days |

| For those that think it's expensive, I say be glad you have it at all, stop bitchin!!!!!! Apparently, making tape is a very nasty process environmentally and expensive and some one has to pay for that. |

| Let's not forget that the majority [not all, but the majority] of tape rolled has always been on "label" projects... the kind with "a budget" that can figure the cost of tape into that budget... it's only us guys who do "self budgeted" or "indie" recordings that will feel a bit of a sting from $289/roll... especially if you figure you'll need at least 4 rolls for an album if you're rolling at 30ips. On the bright side... if you're rolling off the 2" into a digital storage medium then you'll only need 1 roll... and $289- for that kind of effect processor probably isn't all that expensive [if that's the effect you're looking to achieve]. Peace.

| Lives for gear | I dont know where you bought tape from, for me it was about 105 dollars. Before Quantegy closed the first time I was getting GP9 for 144 a reel, when they came back it was almost 200 and within a few months was close to 240. 289 is 300 at least with shipping , so if you use 4 reels of tape for an album that's 1200 versus 600 a little more than 2 years ago. Sadly in the last year I have not been able to convince one new client to go for a reel of tape. This has NEVER been the case. I'm glad ATR is finally online.

| Lives for gear | It's great to have two suppliers of tape! Only testing and usage will tell if ATR is able to match the superb sonics and useability of the mighty RMGI product. RMGI 900 is incredible.

| But you did respond. I'm not trying to be mean but it's kinda of a strange tack you are taking, insulting people, if you really want to talk about professional recording. And I will add that if you really LOVE music, you WILL learn to LOVE tape. |

and posted what you posted it is your lucky day as i am both stupid and crazy and looking forward to buying some new atr tape blender, i would suggest you take a little bit more time and demonstrate that you love music - i admire your panache, but calling "your worst song better than the beatles best song" on the other, beatles thread, is somewhat provacative - to many people the beatles were a pretty great band if your assessment of your own talents is even remotely accurate, i would suggest recording with magnetic tape - it sounds great be well - jack

| Lives for gear | Ampex was what became quantegy, and if you paid 125 -150 you paid at least 35 dollars a reel too much. BTW if you'd like I'll sell you some brand new GP9 for 495, and save ya five bucks! |
