Things that were mentioned that I refuse to believe are "not so great".

1176, neve, ssl, u87's, c12's, 33609

Please don't use ipod headphones to mix people! I would agree that they've been used a lot....perhaps overused, but these are still amazing.

of *course* it's a matter of personal taste... i don't get that anyone here is claiming otherwise.

disappointment comes from failed expectations and unmet needs. what could be more personal than expectations and needs?

the problem lies in false expectations for example how can one expect 1176 to be clean sounding comp? one must expect something based on some sort of experience cause if the expectation is based on fairy tales it often can result in unhappy ending.

Neve 33609 metal switch - fully up to spec etc.. just didn't do it for me. I sold it and then 2 years later saw one listed cheap locally and thought maybe it was me etc.. bought this unit and sold it a week later..

I think it would have been perfect back in the day but with so many choices these days..

GML 8200 - a Souless box - this one was a real shock.

Pro Tools. Appropriately named, but overall a disappointment. (I still haven't been able to wash the sound of the digi verb plug-in out of my memory...so painful...so very, very painful...)

Try them again, Valley Audio was racking them up wrong in those days. Set the PSU for 24 volts when it was supposed to be 32 and incorrectly wired the faders in. A loss of 4dB's of headroom, plus whatever sonic degradations.

that's probably a cardinal sin on this forum. tutt
i prefer other "flavours" for lack of a better word. it's very subjective.

You know, API pres on their own bore me too. But I like their signal chains - I think on the whole API sounds great. But a single pre into DAW...snore

The Chandler Germanium micpre did not blow me away either, but the eq more than made up for my lack of love for the pre. The EQ in the germanium line is amazing. Mic pre is a little too boxy for me.

There is plenty of gear that got more hype than I thought it deserved and equally as much gear that I am blown away by that a lot of people don't talk about much, or never took off.
ditto. I have one that I use like "guess I'll use the Germanium since it's the only thing not in use" bores me for some reason.

Love my TG1 and the LTD pres are nice.

Ridiculous pricing, too!

have one that's been sitting in the back of a cabinet for ages.

works good on bands who wanna self-produce their second record. Can't believe people still ask if you have a U87?????
