I do talk to a lot of Folcrom users and the general consensus seems to be that people like cleaner preamps on the Folcrom than they thought they would. A little color across the mix goes a long way.

I've been using the A-Designs MP-2A with great results. If you can get your hands on one, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Lots of options out there.
I believe the style of music plays an important role in preamp selection.
Others may disagree.

ITB can sound spectacular.
I do it all the time, without regret.
I've learned (through forums like this) about the absolute importance of gain staging and correct levels in the DAW.

OTB can be spectacular too.
Another option.
When OTB, I like:

Folcrom > HV-3D/MA-2.2 or DRS-2 > STC-8 > Red 2

So many terrific options out there. IMHO

That being said, the LaChapell 992EG is perfect in this application. Just a little gentle mid push and coloration, but still full range freq and fast.

Preamp with Folcrom

Hey Guys,

After much research, I've decided to go with the Folcrom to bring my PT mixes OTB. My question is, I'm looking at getting the Brent Averill API 312a stereo mic pre's for the gain makeup and wanted to know if anyone has used these. I'm looking for a big transparent sound with a bit of color.

Talk to me.

much as i love BA's work and 312s, i wouldn't use those as my only option for your application. they're fine pres but 'transparent' is not an adjective i'd give them.

if you can swing it try to go in a direction that gives you more options. a pair of SH Gamas or Cranesong Flamingo come to mind. either one can be very transparent, or not.

I love my Folcrom. I have used it with various pres (a designs pacifica, mp2, studio technologies mic preeminence) and have found that I like mating it with clean pres the best. I actually just ordered the jcf lever with transformers from Mercenary. Being able to use my outboard during mix down is another big plus.

i'm selling mine. PM if interested. lightly used, perfect shape.

i just don't use it anymore because we insert outboard via converters now instead of patching to the folcrom (have 48 ADAs now). we used to use different pres but the ones that saw the most use with Folcrom were Shadowhills Gamas; you get three different very good sounds at the flick of a switch. highly recommended for the Folcrom if you want to flick back and forth between sounds quickly to see which suits the tune

we also have vintage Neve 1084/1081, API 312, Avalon M22, Chandler, T'Funk V72, etc. Gamas were usually my faves with the Folcrom.

Just wanted to stop by and say that I received the jcf levers from Mercenary. I got the ones with transformers and they sound great. The folcrom and lever combo is perfect. When pairing preamps with the folcrom the Pacifica gave my mix extra midrange, the studio technologies was a bit to hard sounding in the upper mids and my a designs mp2 made the mix settle into the speakers, which wasn't always good. The jcf lever has a nice character but remains neutral enough that I never think about pairing anything else with the folcrom. I actually half normalled the folcrom to the lever I liked it so much. Does anyone else love their folcrom lever combo?
