| LA3A CL1B 1176 None of those are fast? That one in bold couldn't be fast. No way. No way could an attack time of 20 microseconds be fast. Nope slow as hell. ![]() But to answer the question of what high end comp for vocals, CL1B or 1176. Both very different, but both could do vocal duties nicely. >>AG |

| It hasn't been mentioned yet, but an 1176 would be great for your needs... ![]() |

| Pendulum OCL-2 I love the Pendulum OCL-2. Fast mode, not a lot of color, but musical/not cold. Great piece. I love to use it for tracking. Also great for groups. You can compress more and with more color in mixdown. My 2 cents. |

| If you don't mind spending under $300.00, the FMR RNLA is great for tracking! Otherwise you might like the Cranesong STC-8 for tracking (though a bit more scratch...). |

| Portico 5043. I love that thing. Plus the added benefit of being stereo. :-) |

| I was adding sarcasm after your sarcasm. ![]() Also to note, I don't believe the Brauner or Germanium have HPFs? The 'Meek does, but if that's something you'd be replacing, that might be a base you'd want to cover for rap vocals, especially if you're going to be feeding dynamics processors within the chain... |

| Pre's are all a matter of personal taste... our taste is going to be different than yours which will be different from _____'s, which will be way different from _____'s. Give a bunch a try and hear what works best for the way you arrange your music would be the best advice in terms of pre-amps... though the Germanium is indeed a damn good one... so is the Great River, and the Sebatron, and the Thermionic Culture, and the[list goes on for another 30 minutes]. We do a bit of rap stuff at our joint [actually, Adam does the rap stuff... he's younger than me and understands the genre better though I do mix the stuff every now and again]. Mostly he uses the Chandler TG-1 when it's coupled with the SM-7b and the Purple Audio MC-77 when it's coupled with a condenser mic [like the Brauner VM-1X or the Telefunken M-16]. Again, it's a matter of taste and the sonic arrangement of all the music but I will say Adam's tracks are usually exceptionally easy to mix, and don't often take a lot of fidgeting to get to sit in the track in a large and musical manner. As always, YMMV. Peace.

| Compession Try a Universal Audio 610. It is a pre / comp. Smooth & fast. I also use the Vocusrite session pak for vocals. DBX 576 is a great all round vocal unit as well ...if you can find someone to part with it...

| For smoother stuff, CL1B is the bee's knees. More control than an LA-2/3A, and less heavy color than a 2A (which works great... when it works). The variable ratio is great for fine-tuning the amount of squeeze once you get the attack & release happening. For punchier, more up front vocals (pop, some hip hop), 1176s & MC77s can be supremely cool. You can either run them as straight limiters (faster attack & release), or dig in a little more with medium settings. The envelope of that family is pretty aggressive, and might not be the flavor you want for everything. As far as versatility goes, a Distressor is a nice fallback, since you can work through about a dozen different compression options in the span of a verse. Especially if the singer's technique is suspect, one of those can come in reeeal handy... However you're going to get that piece's coloration... (I hear a Trakker can do the same job cleaner, but have never laid my ears on one.) In other news, I recently discovered what the TG-1 can do on BG vox... ![]() |
