Ive been juicing it up with phatom power for about 4 hours now and it is still not working. How long does it take to charge up?

Maybe you're not getting any power. Try licking the cable to see if you're getting a voltage from the preamp.

OK, do NOT do this. I repeat, do NOT do this.

there is no charging time
phantom power is pretty much instantaneous

you should check the rest of your signal path
if not
i would say its a problem with the mic

I purchased a brand new u87 today , went home hooked it up and couldnt get any signal. I called the store and asked them they said that i have to leave on the phantom power for a while because the circuits need it. Its been about 4 hours. Now i am wondering if the mic is just broken.

You might want to run it under some cold water while you're charging it. If it starts to make funny sounds and smoke comes out, the mic is definitely broken.

SERIOUSLY THOUGH:
Take it back.

Stating the obvious: make sure your 48V is engaged on the pre, mixer, etc.

Perhaps less obvious: did you try swapping mic cables?

I have a sm58 dynamic mic. I get signal from that, then just pop the same cable into the condenser u87 and switch to 48v and get nothing. This really sucks buying a mic getting all excited and then finding out it is dead.

This belongs in the "stupidest things ever heard at guitar center" thread.

"yeah, the phantom power takes a little time to charge up, gives it that extra boost".

Not meaning to be nasty here, but ...
I have to wonder how someone so clueless can justify spending $2000 on a mic and not know how to "turn it on". My "good" LDC mics are Rode NT2000s - and I had plenty of experience with lesser mics, phantom power and such long before I could afford those. I'm not even close to having a U87 in the budget.
Am I the only one who feels something is out of whack with this situation?

I don't know anyone at that one. Definitely take it back, ask to speak to the store manager. Don't take any excuses. If it doesn't work with phantom engaged it's defective. You don't have to "warm it up", it's not a tube mic. If they give you shit, just return it and order one from a reputable dealer.

Wait a minute, are you using an Mbox? Cause that might matter.

Have you checked to see if there is 48v at the end of the mic cable and the cable continuity is fine on all three conductors? Audio 101.

Great!!! Now for the record - You are the one who is now responsible for explaining what continuity is, and how it relates to a three conducter cable. This could take weeks.

Yeah, just because it works with your SM57 doesn't mean that the shield is connected on both ends (which it has to be to deliver phantom power.) So at least try another cable. If you have a DMM you can check to see if the 48V is making it out to the end of the cable.

Regards,

John

I guess not.

Ive worked with plenty of u87's (silver color ones) before. I love the sound i get from them. The task was simple just put in the cable, put on phantom power and voila! However I finally saved up enough money to buy a black one to match my studio, brought it home , did the same thing and it didnt work. So I started doubting myself and called the salesman up and that is the advice he gave me. Yes it was stupid listening to him , however the last thing on my mind was that i bought a faulty black u87, so I tried his advice. Very stupid , but some people do stupid shit in desperate situations.

Dude! So you still think the defect has something to do with the color of the mic?
