My G-SSL sounds great, i use it on the Drum Bus all the time. No two will probably sound alike unless they were built together with the same parts, obviously some builds will sound better than others! It doesn't sound exactly like the real thing but its not too far off! |

I could build one for you (and have been meaning to build two for myself here for quite a while), but its' an amazing learning experience to build something like that yourself. They say, "Not a beginner project", but really things like that aren't hard/bad to build. I'd rather sit down and solder an entire board of parts than make two XLR cables. The hardware will likely have more non-linearities which are unique (and basically what you are looking for in a compressor that has 'character') than the software. Also it looks F'ing cool in the rack if done right. If you still want it built, contact me and we can talk, but it really is a DIY project, and the Y is pretty important. Once you factor in the time that you spend, sometimes it's just as cheap to go buy a real SSL comp (depending on what your job or hourly rate is. CLA's time is worth more than the time it would take him to build a few G-SSLs)

G-SSL was my 1st DIY project and was not very hard to build because even if you dont understand a schematic, theres so much info and pictures on the web (on this project) that its not so hard to figure out. You can gets the PCB's from Audio Kitchen for cheap and then just go and buy the parts list, from there a bit of soldering, some metal work, and your away! This forum is also very usefull: Prodigy Professional :: Index |

The soldering you do then will be more difficult IMHO than what you will do on the G-SSL. Why? Because on the G-SSL you'll probably order/buy decent PCBs with solder mask, which makes soldering oh so easy. It's just put the component in, heat the component for a second or so, touch the solder there, remove solder, hold for second, pull away, and it's soldered. The worst thing is soldering up to pots, jacks, switches, and other junk like that IMHO. Stuff on the board is cake. I will build stuff for people (even if I haven't built it before) but I will have to factor in my time minimally for the cost of building. Keep in mind everyone that while yes this will have a SSL-like buss comp sound, it will not make it sound like an SSL. Part of what makes an SSL sound like it does is the miles of cables/traces that the sound goes through, and the god-knows how many gain stages, buffers, etc. | |

i had never built anything electronic before i built this. i understood the basics but other than that had not soldered anything more than a XLR. i so happy a was able to build one and it was so easy as so many people had done before me and Jakob (Gyraf) had done all the hard work! almost every problem that you will have someone has had before and it is well documented on the Prodigy pro forum (group diy). for what it will cost you you might as well build it yourself. as you will learn something and maybe give you the confidence to build some other projects. i am now building some NEVE style preamps which i would have never have attempted a year ago. so give it ago you will not be sorry. there are many people here to help you. |

I guess I'll jump into this thread, too, and ask anybody that is registered at the Prodigy board to PM an admin and ask them to check the authorization emails. I signed up days ago and haven't gotten my authorization to post.
