Studer 24 trks.....what are they worth?

We have an assortment of these (x6) which are barely used. I wanna try and persuade the powers that be to off-load a few of 'em and buy an Aria ATR 1" 2 trk or the Tim de Paravicini machine.

Does anyone have a view as to what these machines are worth these days?

Are they worth less in Europe? (I'm guessing they are).

Studer A-800 Mk III
Studer A-800 Mk I
Studer A-820 MCH

Cheers.....D.

In most cases the prices of 2" and analogue machines in general, is a direct function of the wear on the heads these days more than anything else it would seem. THe genreal hours and conditions comeinto it as well but not as much.. cos with shot head most machines that i have seen recently went cheap as pure 'parts' or 'junkers' to be scavenged over.

That being said the prices are

820? between 14-29K( new)

800 mk1 between 5-9K

800 mk3 8-15?

there are really vague prices but as it is, these machines are dropping monthly , even weeksly in some cases.

Also i think from memmory the mk1 uses a completely different head stack and is funky and VERY hard to get spares and heads especially.. i think they were made for German/swiss broadcast or soemthing. .316 heads on those puppies compared to .317's on most ofther studers.

Cheers

Funky Junk have an 820 with dolby (claimed to be Studer's demo machine) for GBP13000...2500 hours.

Cheers,

A friend of mine who's building a studio picked up 2 A800mk3's for 10,000 for both, from a well respected and maintained studio in L.A.
the heads were also relapped. It's a joke what these machines are going for now.
There is also only one company making 2 inch tape , as of this week.

A joke? well yes, but studer is the least funny. MCI's are DIRT cheap.
They may not be as good as Studers, but that means nothing 'cause Telefunkens are and those are dirt cheap as well (if you can find one).
Frankly, I think Studers are way overpiced cheap.
But who cares...
I think with those machines (well taken care of, ex-wisseloord (right?),current Studer prices) some 5000- 6000 euros should be fine.
Just to bad you guys don't use them anymore.

What about Emtec?

When you say there is only one company producing 2" tape as of this week, do you mean that Emtec has ceased manufacturing the 2" tape? If so, this is news to me. What is your source of info. please?

Thanks,
Plush

We just picked up an A80 retrofitted with 800 electronics about two months ago.
$6,000 USD. Mint condition/Remote auto-locator/5000 hrs.

You mean 2" hard drive, like in an iPod, right?

It's only Quantegy now. I think BASF/Emtec haven't been maming tape for nearly a year now. Any Emtec you see/use would be left over stock........

As for 2" prices, I'd look at the motors, brakes, anything physical and also the cards, see if they're in good condition.

The above information differs wildly from what I know to be a fact. It's obvious you don't use that much tape.

Emtec is producing tape as we speak and it is available world wide. The only tapes they quit making were those that they did not make themselves--ie. dat, 8mm data tapes.
Emtec is making SM900, 911 and 468 in all widths and lengths.
1/4", 1/2", 1", 2".

Here in the US, Emtec has changed the way they distribute tape.
This less efficient distributor network coupled with the poor dollar has made their products more expensive than Quampex and thus, less likely to be stocked at your local tape house.

It's true that there is a bunch of "left over" Emtec tape stock, but that does not mean you can't order new stock, cause you can any day you like.

This is pretty important news for people who require a continuous supply of good analog tape.

Maybe this is a silly question, but do you think you'll still be able to buy (new) 1" tape in 15 years?

Perhaps we won't be able to buy 1" tape in 15 years. But we WILL be able to play it back!

Is tape manufacturing a heavy industrial process (like making CD-R's), or could it conceivably be carried on (after the big players throw in their hats) by some (tape) freaks on a small scale?

well, the r&d is already done, the machinery is already built. its just a matter if someone wants to keep the factory open and keep turning out reels. it does involve chemicals and plastics.

What are the hours on them?

How are the heads, how many times have they been relapped?

Why don't you set up a "studer 24 track" competition, here on gearslutz?
Or just give them to me

Hi everyone, I've heard about a Studer A800 mkIII and a A820 for sale in the Netherlands (Eindhoven area), but I didn't find it on the web.
Does anybody knows where they are ?
Thanks.
