The New API 1608 Console

I was at a demo of this unit. This is the prototype, the only one in existence. It's an amazing console and the price is suprisingly low. Check it out. It's amazing.

That is $50k loaded with the eq modules I assume...? What if one already has a large collection of API 500 series eqs and just wants to buy a 1608 with NO eqs...? IS that possible? If so, approximate cost?

If a typical API 500 series eq is say about $1,000.... 16 X $1,000 = $16,000. $50k - $16k = $34k....??? So, is an unloaded 1608 about $34k...???

Looks good but at 50K it seems API is doing a lot of wishful thinking...

I spoke with the API guys about this at AES Vienna in May. I have been hush hush of course till now, but from what I understand, the mic preamps are built in but the EQ modules can be swapped out.

Jeremy,

Can you please clarify what the 548B module consists of? If I delete the 548B from the setup am I losing just the mic preamps or am I losing an EQ also. I'm unclear on this.

It sounds like if you delete all the preamp and EQ modules, we're talking about $20k for the basic frame?

Is there a brochure or some kind of literature you can make available?

thanks,
Brad

Brad,

The 548B is the input module it has everything but the EQ. It consist of Buss assignments, Panning, Mic Pre, Aux Send, Solo, Mute, Pad & Phantom Power. If you only wanted 8 inputs you could remove 8-548B's. Hopefully this answers your question!

Oh yeah!

Looks really cool and even though I've got an SSL AWS900 console and shouldn't be looking at anything else for a few years (lease), this has got me really interested and wating to get one!

I just hope they make it so that we can really add in our 500 modules (other brands) to mix/match. That would be killer.... And if Derr can put out a distressor500,..... hmmm... I'd get one. Still thinking....

Can someone put up some pics of it?

Hmmm $35k for 16ch unloaded...

only 5k more than the RND 5088 for pretty much the same feature set.

Adding 500 series modules for less than the price of a Portico penthouse plus modules = cool.

Especially with the 500 series being so easy to DIY for too...dream up all the EQ you want.

Full 5.1 monitoring and forthcoming automation is nice...looks sexy too, yet I think it is still pricy.

I like how they planned the feature set of the 548B - do you have a panel drawing of that strip?

Did I get this right: the modules don't have to be slimmer, like on the older consoles?
And what about double-width modules, will they fit too?

Yeah thats what I meant to say. Just checked the vid again. 8 aux sends too so its a slightly better deal than the RND.

A ToftATB is sooo not API's market place.

No offence Art but asking them to make a mixer for £3000 with the ATBs kind of feature set would remove everything good about the design that makes an API an API...ie 2520s and 2503s and the 500 series EQs.

If a mixer for £3000 is what you want with EQ and the features of the Toft then buy the Toft!!! It strikes me that all you want is the Toft repackaged with an API logo on it so you can say you have an API console.

API is meant to be upper-market high end.
I agree that its not going to sell in its thousands but they will sell...because it is an API console full of the good stuff!

Now a console for £10k with the feature set of the API but with some 'cheaper' circuitry might be an interesting prospect and I agree there is a market there.

But the Speck LiLo is there and it doesn't seem to be shifting - I wonder how many Vince has sold in total...10, 20?

This is EXTREMELY cool, but I think API didn't think this thing through. With $50k budget you have a more than a handful of options of nice consoles. Right now there are less people willing to spend $50k on a nice board.
Naa 50K isn't bad at all. It would cost you 40k just for the pres,eq,montor section, summing box etc, and furniture for a similiar set up. But with this you get the bussing, routing, sends, vu's, faders et al

Still want to know if it's inline and how many inputs to mix though...?
