Thread Starter | Neve Sidecar? Hi there! I am in the market for a Neve sidecar! yahoo! It can be any model (focusing mostly on Melbourne or BCM10), but it should be in good working order. I know these things can need a lot of work, but I am looking for one in good shape. Anyone here know of one for sale? Where's the best place to look? People who have one--can you share where you got it and what your experience was like with the seller? Thanks a ton! |

| Lives for gear | Just for giggles, check out the Wunderbar. Mike makes a sidecar, you can put Neve modules in it, and .... it's new! |

Thread Starter | Yeah I have checked these out too. . . they look pretty awesome. Have you had the pleasure of using one? I'm curious how they measure up to a 1073 or 1084. I'm pretty sure the person I am buying for is pretty intent on the Neve name, but thanks for the idea! |

Thread Starter | I saw this one--thanks! I am going to give them a call today. Have you ever purchased from them? This is a bank breaking purchase, and I have never bought from them, so I would love any comments you might have about their customer service etc. |

The reason I mentioned it was for the frame, not the modules. There's a possibility you could get the frame and load Neve modules into it. It's basically the same functionality, but there should be fewer headaches. The routing modules will be different, but I wouldn't miss the old ones. Also, there's the bonus of having moving faders available at much less than FF. Can you tell I want one? | |

| i second the wunderbar idea. a neve 8014 usually goes for around 65 grand. i think the estimate i heard was you could get a 32 channel wunderbar for that price. twice the channels and all balanced routing. its (obviously) a neve inspired console except mondernized . not so much the sound is modernized but the functionality and wiring is modernized. if you are looking into a bcm 10 i think(from what ive heard) the 12 channel wunder bar(smallest version) goes for around 30 grand. im sure it would be much less if you got it without the wunder modules and you could still install neve 1073s in it. the wunderbar can even come in RAF blue to match the neve modules. can you tell i want one too? as much as i would love an 8014, i cant justify the price. most of the price is the name, the rest of the price is the dealer refurbishing it and marking it up for twice what they paid. |

| [QUOTE=El Fatso;1439171]i second the wunderbar idea. a neve 8014 usually goes for around 65 grand. That would be an absolute steal these days... Neve prices have really jumped up in the last couple of years. An 8014 fully-loaded with 1073/1084's and 2254's can be upwards of 90k or more. While that may be outrageous, it's also one of the reasons that a Neve -- any vintage Neve -- is a pretty sound investment. Yes, it's lot of dollars to buy in, but it will hold its value and then some over the years. I'm not saying run out and buy one for that reason, but it's definitely something to consider. Also, regarding the Wunder stuff, I'm not sure I agree that the Wunder console is the right move for this particular poster, at least from what I can glean from his comments. It sounds like the fellow he's helping with this purchase has got his heart set on the Neve name, and I doubt that a Wunder -- even loaded with some Neve modules -- is the thing he's after. To that end, I've whipped up a little price list that may be of some use...this is just some rough estimates based on what I've seen in the last few months, and it presumes that the consoles are in excellent to mint condition: BCM10 w/1073's (Class A discrete, 10x2): 45-50k Melbourn w/3114's (Class A/B discrete, 12x2): 22-24k* Kelso w/3116's (Class A/B discrete, 10x2): 10k 5465 (IC based, 16 x 4 x 2): 9-10k 5442 (IC based, 8 x 2): 4-5k * Non-discrete modules will lower the value somewhat. That's not a value judgement, just a market fact...I think the IC Neves sound awesome. All the best...Cheers -- JB |

Thread Starter | Thanks all for your help so far. The price list was helpful, as has been all the other info. I am checking out the Wunder suff (hopefully we will be able to do a shootout with the racked 1073s that we already have), but it is true that the person I am buying for is interested in Neves above all else. One reason is that she (yes, I am a she as well!) has used a ton of Neves for many different projects and almost always chooses that sound over any other (I know not all Neves are the exact same sound). We have done shootouts with APIs, Grace, BAE Neve and API clones, Focusrite, Sytek, UA610, and more. And while we often use these others as well, she always returns to the Neves. Another reason is the investment angle, which is that we can feel pretty safe that these will only retain/appreciate in value, rather than depreciate. We have a good local tech who can service Neves on a regular basis as well. . . Thanks for the input, and be sure to let me know if anyone sees any out there in the audio marketplace! |
