Thanks all. At this point I think it's a testament to the Toft that I am even considering it, but considering it I am. Will have a look and listen as soon as I can. Of course I am also talking to Randy and Steve and went down to look at a few 428s today... And considering neotek too... But i hear maintainance on those can be a bear... I'm still in construction on the control room, so i have some time...

The Toft doesn't have the wow factor and no meter bridge, but the sound is there for sure. There are a few features missing, but it's an amazing board for the price. If we eventually get rid of our Soundtracs 32x8 in Studio B, the Toft would be one of the first boards I'd be looking at seriously.

Is a meter bridge really that big of a make or break deal? I've done plenty of sessions where I just make sure the needle on the recorder is rockin'.

The rest is just eye candy.

oh man, i understand people's hesitations with old consoles, because when they're dodgy it's a HUGE pain in the ass. but damn those old mci's sound amazing, just open and sweet and overflowing with the bigness. paired up with tape it's a deadly combo.

the toft, i've never used it, and i'd *still* be willing to bet a major organ it doesn't hold a candle.

Really? Why?

You never used it. You have no experience with it.

However, I do. And I just had Steve from Inward Connections do some mods for me on the Toft and it does WAAAAAAY more than "hold a candle."

Funny how man ASSumptions are made 'round these parts.

Inward also has their own incredible creations coming!

Congratulations! I heard THIS recently:

"sage ELECTRONICS is developing a discrete, plugin
replacement for the MCI 2001 IC opamp as used throughout the MCI 400 series
consoles."

I have a blonde 440. It's an amazing console, but the above, if it should happen, would be amazingly exciting to me. It'd be great to replace the master section and a few channels at a time.

Best of luck.

I would be very interested in learning more about what you've had done to your ATB and how to contact whoever did it for you.

I think it was all answered within the post you quoted me in, Steve from Inward Connections (Steve is Inward Connections) and he has his blocks and transformers, the same that help hive his Vac Rac and other creations his sound, he put those in line on the 2-buss and then did some other minor mods (I'm no tech, so you'd have to ask him).

Not sure if he is doing this as a regular service though or not (this was our first experiment at it). He does have his own line of incredible gear (I can not say enough good things about the my Vac Rac) and his other known and coming soon AMAZING creations!

Call him, he's a good guy

Another good resource is Darrin at Vintage King (in fact, he's the one who helped with the idea of modding my Toft). He modded his board (think it's a Yamaha?) and he is a good resource... and a great guy when it's time to buy gear!

-andrews

P.S. I'd like to add that a board is more than just a board, it's how they are built and what you can do with it... like Fletcher's console he's modded out to the nines.

Interesting. Sage makes killer stuff. After my bad ATB experience I've been thinking most likely restoring an MCI is going to be the way to go unless a silly deal on a Neotek pops up. Though I'm curious about this ATB+ they're talking about, if it can deliver I'd be willing to try Toft out again. Of course, if it's anything like the ol' meter bridge, I'll be dead before they release it.

wow ..replacement for MCI 2001....

hmm what about 2002 and 2003M ..that would be cool for 500 serie

400 is great desk..I heard it and like it a lot..I own 532D and all I can say that people who talk about problematic MCI stuff never had expirience with MCI maintaince or dont know basic electronics..MINE is like NEW and when I got it It was PILE OF JUNK!!!!...
and I didnot know anything about electronics when I got it!!

Its possible to fix it easily ..and most parts are available in local store..

MCIs are easy to MOD and get better and better sound...also EQs are dream!!!!!

Its sad that most of MCIs are going to be distroyed in near future !!!! ( i know about 20 MCI consoles wich are now on junkyards in parts or sold for racking) I bought 3 in that condition to make mine!!

OH BTW Im looking for 2 brown MODULES BLANK PANELS FOR MY MCI !!!! ( as you can see in picture)
