Thread Starter | HELP!!! Beer in my AWS 900!!!!!!!
Dear Slutz, Yesterday night I spilled a little bit of (Heineken) beer onto the fader section of my AWS 900. I called the rep today and he'll get back to me, but my main question is: can I have it switched on without damaging the console any further? I need to work and need some mic pre's and a monitor section at least... Cheers, Julian

That sucks. Sorry to hear about it. Rule 1: ALWAYS keep liquids and such AWAY from the console. I hope its something that will never happen again for you. |

if it hasn't been switched on since the incident I wouldnt do so until you are certain it is completely dry. Even then I might not do so until any components have been cleaned. The last thing you want is it shorting out. That could be expensive.

| Lives for gear | Under NO circumstances should you switch anything on that has had a liquid poured into it. Once the beer has gone in, it should stay off untill all the beer has been removed. Even if it apears to work for a while, damage will occurr. The drill for water-beer-coffee damage is 1. Disassemble completely and get the big dirt out 2. Wash everything that has come in contact with the beer (coffee, whatever!) in warm soapy water, leaving it to soak for 24 hrs. 3. rinse in clear warm water. 4. Repeate 2 and 3. The last rinsing in de-ionised water. 5. Leave to dry for at least a week. 6. Replace mechanical parts such as VU meters, switches and pots that have been damaged. 7. Reassemble, test and calibrate. Now you know why you should never have beer and coffee near equipment!

Ouch!! That's gotta hurt! Keep it off--DON'T turn it on. Let SSL or an SSL-approved technician clean it up.. Should be minor though so don't worry too much -- at most might hve to change a fader but other than that, it's basically empty down there (i've seen it). If you absolutely must work, you could open up the panel and turn off the affected fader group (unplug)... But make sure you ask SSL and see if that's an option though. I have a small stool next to the console that I use for drinks. It's saved my butt quite a few times since Murphy's Law states that all drinks will be knocked over in a studio.. or something like that.

listen to the byre. what on earth you were doing with a beer sat casually around a £50,000 console i'll never know. Like letting a dirty poodle into your brand new leather seated car. Best of luck solving it..... |

Heineken?! This console needs at least a Chàteau Mouton Rothschild bordeux for 250,-- EUR the bottle... Just joking. I would suggest to wait for the tech and let the AWS turn out! |

Before we go all doom and despondency, may I offer some hope here. All professional desks I have serviced, have a dirt tray under the fader section that will also catch beer and coffee. Pro-standard faders have their openings on the side or rear in such a way that dirt does not fall into them. So if beer went ONLY into the fader section and it was not a whole quart pot or similar, then you may just get off free with absolutely no damage whatsoever. Now, I do not know the 900, but I have seen them and they have a good mechanical build, so I am guessing that you may be in luck here. So, assuming it has such a dirt tray and the dirt tray will also hold some liquid, this is the drill. This is a DIY job - lift the fader section in its entirety. There should be nothing underneath the fader section other than a metal tray, in your case with some beer in it. If you are Scottish, get a straw and carefully drink the beer. Otherwise, just carefully mop it up with kitchen towels. Now open up the desk and check that no beer went anywhere else. As I do not know the desk, I have no idea how to open it up, but chances are, it will be a combination of lifting strips and dropping bottom plates. Check that no beer got into anything else. If not, then you are in luck. If it did, see my first posting! Clean the faders if they are P&G and got beer inside them. Good luck! (And don't do it again!) |

Keep it off, you don't wanna risk any serious damage! ![]() That said, an AWS 900 CAN work with some of the modules removed, but that'll depend on how much and where exactly the beer was spilled!

I'm always available for a houshold tip dear. Now I was allways finding that my late husband (that's Sound Bloke) was spilling his tinear powder in the faders of his SSL. He'd never be so careless as to spill beer. Anyway dear. Prop the AWS 900 up on bricks so that it's tilted forward - they are only small. Now all of the liquid will fall to the front of the frame. Get a syringe (you're dutch, you should have one hanging around dear) and put some thin rubber hose on it. My late husband (that's Sound Bloke) allways used the hose from his catheta! Take the top off the fader section of the console, get an empty bottle then suck the beer into the syringe, transferring it into the bottle. It will have lost much of it's carbonation but it will still get you rat arsed drunk. Now I know you've forked out a wad of guilders on an SSL but that's no excuse to be drinking cheap piss like Heineken. At least Grolsch has a re-sealable cap to stop you from spilling it. SSL's are from Oxfordshire, you should only spill fine, cask conditioned real ales on them. I hope this has prevented you from getting into a tizz and cutting your ear off or something. |

Ah man that sucks! As funny as this thread should not be, I can't help but laughing at the responses. As far as his excuse for drinking Heineken, I see that the place where he works did a commercial for them! The irony... |

Thread Starter | Thanks guys..
...especially the Byre! Of course I called SSL, and I opened the console and un-powered the fader bank affected. I do think that the "print-plate" (is that correct english?) under the fader bank is damaged. So I'm a bit pessimistic... Wednesday the SSL-rep is coming over Cheers, Julian |

Sad to hear this... Maybe Grolsch is better, cause you can close and reopen the bottle again and again... and tastes better imao To get serious again, don´t do anything. SSL has a great support. Let them help you and don´t loose your warrenty. Best Luck! |

I once got a little water inside an electronic unit. I disassembled it and attempted to clean all the water out, including sucking water off and out with a high powered vacuum, and then blowing out every minute crevice with compressed air, repeating, etc until there was zero detectible evidence of water / moisture. Then let the unit sit in a dry place for a few days. Turned the piece on and it did NOT work correctly, evidence of something shorting out. Bummer. There must have still been a bit of moisture in there. Tested it a few times, it was definitely not operating correctly. Turned it off and forgot about it for about a month. Turned it on again after that and it worked perfectly!!! I think it just needed that much extra time for every last molecule of H2o to evaporate from every square millimeter of the unit. Food and beer stays FAR away from gear around here... violation of this rule is punishable by death ... ok, maybe not death, but at least a few blows to the head. |

I think the obvious question has become: who makes a great large-fortmat beer-proof console? If someone out there takes up this noble challenge to create such a beer-friendly beast I would also like to see a spigot and an ashtray penciled into the design as well. As a side note, i poured a whole cup of coffee into a friends behringer once. frankly it sounded better for it. |
