Vintage Designs CL1 MKII users?

I have been using this compressor and it is awesome. I have been comparing it to the Zener, Tube tech Cl1bs and Buzz SOC, and it clearly has its own incredible sound. It adds weight and smoothness. And it is beating out my tube tech cl1b on some vocals. (both are awesome in their own way.)

At $3600 new, I do not understand why there are not more posts about this compressor.

Maybe some others will chime in.

This comp has definitely caught my eye, and I've been seriously trying to get it in to demo, but I don't have the cash for it at this moment (need to sell off a few items on ebay first).

My primary interest would be using it in mastering - have you put it across the 2-bus yet? If so, how did it fare?
Also - are all the controls stepped or are there some that are continuously variable?

Best regards,
Steve Berson

I have one in my recording room.

Yup, it is good enough to run a mix via. thumbsup

It has stepped switches, suitable for mastering.

My unit is equiped with Neve transformers.

Only downside with it, is that it does not have any
on/off switch.

Best wishes

At least the power supply has an on and off switch.
The master outputs are not stepped but are not that hard to adjust.

I think I have St. Ives transformers. Is there a different transformer option? Just curious why you mentioned the neves? Bob - maybe you can respond to this?

Also, it does lose some high end when pushed. But for a mix, you do not want to run that many db of reduction anyway, so it works great. Also, Bob, I am curious if you are losing some high end when pushed?

The built in high pass is great too.

The CL1-mkII has been the most used compressor in my room for the last several months... and while I've tried it on 2 buss [with great results] I generally find it a more valuable asset for vocals [sometimes vocal subs] and/or guitars [or guitar subs] than over the entire mix... then again a few years ago a company called Drawmer decided to build me a 2 buss compressor that was suited to my sense of aesthetic called the 1968... which I guess is why I end up using that unit on most of the mixes I do.

Go figure.

Best of luck with your search!!

Hiya

Nope, I was lucky when I bought mine, they had a couple of old Neve transformers from the 60:s (not exactly sure might have been from the 70s also??) laying around so I included them in the purchase. Not standard equipment in a CL1MKII, though. The transformers are suppose to make the sound even a bit smoother & rounded. Hopefully so, I paid extra for them anyway.

I have not pushed it during mixing on the main bus in my recording room.

I do that in my mastering room, with other gear. I could try it though? Just as a test.

I have special custom made Vintage Design gear in the mastering room,
that only exist in 3 copies. It consists mostly of parts from the 50:s.

This is an old thread and I just want to chime in and say that the Vintage Design CL1mkII is pure magic on vocals. Like you say it adds weight and a smooth kind of punch. It can make less than ideal vocals sound interesting and great vocals sound spectacular. Puts a smile on my face every time I use it. The CL1mkII sounds great on most instruments, but for vocals it's pure magic.

I've tried it on 2 buss and it do add some weight but at the same time the stereo width get a little smaller and the lowend can become slightly blurred. Personally I prefer a more transparent 2 buss compressor.

If you're interested in CL1mkII then do try it out (if possible).

Magic...

Cheers
