Where I can find a Neve 8078a manual?

I have been searching all over the internet for a user manual either to buy or download for the Neve 8078a console. I wanted to be able to read over it a few times in the next few weeks. The place I am probably going to end up interning at has 2 of them and I want to get to know him (8078) before I get there so I can be more comfortable with it. Plus I figured it would just be good to have for reference. So if anyone has any idea where I can find the manual let me know. My email is enthawizeguy@yahoo.com or you can just PM me.

Thanks in advance,
Ian Datz

With all due respect... it's just a board. Things you should probably know... you need to assign the channels to busses for 2 mix output... the aux send knobs require that you push them down once [so they pop up] before they'll work [or the studio where you're working may just leave them up all the time... but I prefer them down unless I'm acutally using the send].

Leave the little metal switch on the top of the module alone and use the master switching logic to put the desk into mic or line. Find out if the desk has been modded so the jukebox folds back into the 2 mix... or if there is an output patch from the jukebox so it can fall back into the 2 mix.

Other than that... no real voodoo to the thing... and chances are that anyplace that has a couple of these things has an assisting staff that will be able to answer any questions you might have about the desk.

Have a great session!!

Hi

Unless you are a tech, the manual will be of no use to you at all. It consists of parts lists, circuit diagrams (many of which are A0 size) and general info of use to someone that needs to fix one. They are an approx 3" thick ring binder.

There is no "user manual".

Fletcher's advice was spot on.

Geoff is right. We have an 8078 with the original manual and it is very useful for our tech but not really for anyone using the desk. If you are used to large format consoles there should not be anything too difficult to understand.

Hi

Belated congratulations on the new studio... it's refreshing to see new studios opening in the UK after so many studio closures!

In the strictest possible of definitions, what you have there isn't an 8078 but is a cool custom console from which the 8078 was developed. The monitor routing units are the give away as these are 32425s on an 8078 and the weak link in the program chain on that console because of the losses caused through the L/R and F/B pan pots with no buffering. The amplifier has to run at higher level to overcome these losses and this chews off the mixdown headroom. I've fixed this issue on several 8078's but it was a bean counting measure on the 8078 that probably doesn't apply to your console.

Custom consoles were almost always superior to the standard versions!

Thanks, I didn't realize that the older manuals were that different. Thanks for all the info guys. I should be fine than. I know the Neve VR pretty well and I am sure after some time on the 8078 ill get to know it better.

Hi Geoff

Thanks - I'm pleased to say we have been very busy since we launched and the console has been a big factor in attracting a good client list.

As you say, our desk is actually a custom Neve console (made for CBS Sony in Japan) which was built to a higher specification than the later standard 8078's and doesn't have the headroom issue. We usually refer to it as a 'custom 8078' as it avoids a lengthy technical explanation.

Maybe we're underselling it a bit but most people are happy to work on a classic Neve - whatever the model number!
