You might want to check the Dangerous Monitor. That and a BiG Ben will put your stuff in order. Chris Muth is making the best digital/analog monitoring and summing devices that I've heard. Despite Nika's uninformed shot, by calling them effects boxes, the Dangerous stuff is quickly becoming the new standard. chap |

I've got a Big Ben already, and it does seem to give the music a more relaxed quality, bigger bottom, smoother sound overall, etc... The UA 2192 would still be useful in conjunction with the Big Ben, for additional word clock distribution. I'll have a look at the Dangerous stuff now though. I thought they only made the analog summing boxes, didn't know they made a dig' to analog monitor unit. The Crane Song Avocet will be very nice I'm sure, but pricey. Grace has some digitally controlled units, both stereo and 5.1 monitor controllers with D/A, but again, not cheap. These don't have the nice A/D that the 2192 does though, which in my studio will equal 10 channels of dual-wire A/D @ 96 khz along with with 2 Mytek ADC 8x96's. Actually, two 2192's would be nice! Think I'll try one first and see how I like it. Plus it can be used as an A/D for tracking and a separate monitoring DAC at the same time. A very flexible unit, and the price seems reasonable if it sounds as good as everyone is saying. Certainly compared to Weiss, Lavry, Prism, etc... you're getting a lot for your money with the UA 2192. I'll reserve further comments until I have one to listen to here. |

The Dangerous Monitor has a custom made Troisi converter built in. I use mine with Apogees and the sound is as good as anything I've heard. You can check out my little rig in the April issue of Mix. Most of these other boxes are modeled after the Dangerous unit. Jim Chapdelaine |

Newb here looking to improve my front end (actually I don't have a front end, I beg borrow rent at the moment). I do mostly classical (and classical type) stuff. My dream setup is two channels of utra clean beauty coming into PT. So the question is, how do the Mytek Stereo96 AD and DA compare with the higher end/larger Mytek units? Is this box well suited for classical recording? Any recommendations? Thanks guys, just found this site, I totally dig it...though I'm afraid of what it might do to my bank balance |

At the risk of sounding stupid... I've been using an Apogee AD16, the stock converters in the Motu 2408 Mk II & Mk III and 24io, and CraneSong HEDD192 (by far the best of the bunch); all clocked from an AArdvark ArdsyncII. I've seen the Laverys, Mytecks and the like spoken of a lot in this forum but haven't had the privelage of trying them out. How would you describe the improvements over what I'm using. Obviously the Motu converters (though a good value for the $) are not in the same league. But what about the AD16 and HEDD converters? Are the Myteks, Benchmark's and Lavery's one of those small percentage improvements or is it really that big a difference? I'm not a golden ear so it's hard for me to quantify what it actually is that sounds better, but I can hear an improvement in the sound of the HEDD converters over those in the AD16. |

The Mytek and Lavry are in the same league as the HEDD. Once you get up to the level of the HEDD, you're basically talking shades of great. The differences are very real, but you won't be disappointed with any of those.

How are you finding the newest Benchmark ADC1 to be in terms of sound quality?
