need help with my setup!

currently my set up consists of..

Motu 896HD
api rack filled with various pre's
1 distressor
1 fatso
1 gssl bus comp
dynaudio bm5a monitors
logic pro

ive spent a long time trying to find a workflow and set up that i can be comfortable with and im currently looking into getting an apogee AD16x or rosetta 200 or even Trak 2 for the ad 2 channel conversion. im also interested in getting a folcrom or dangerous 2 bus for analogue summing.
as far as i know the 896hd has great d/a so would i be fine using that and sending to a folcrom or 2bus...im kind of lost here and am just trying to figure out what i really need/dont need and how to implement this set up for a steady workflow.

any help would be great...thanks!

If you're mixing in the box, the Dangerous 2 bus makes a HUGE difference in the sound of a mix. The imaging is greatly improved, the sound is way more open and alive. Even if you have to send stems to it (like if you have more than 16 tracks in your mix), you won't believe the difference. I'd suggest renting one and giving it a try. FYI, Neve makes a similar box, the 8816, and there's some debate about which one sounds better. Purely a matter of opinion.

yeah ill be mixing itb and i really am stumped about getting the folcrom or 2bus, i like that the folcrom relies on your pres but at the same time, the 2bus sounds like it just does so much more to your sound. guess ill have to test them both out.

(Warning: Pimp at work)

I don't think anybody's said that the Folcrom will do less, in terms of sonic impact, than the D2B. Our main selling point when it comes to this comparison is sonic flexibility. If you have preamps on hand at mixdown time, the Folcrom opens up a lot of options. Ultimately I think that these are the two best summing devices on the market, and trying them both will bring you to your own conclusion about whether you find the tonal flexibility meaningful. There are a great many satisfied users of both products.

IMO you could "frakenstein" it for a while ( I did ) but if your thinking about upgrading your AD's you'll want to upgrade your DA's someday as well.

I bought my dangerous 2 bus lt when I had 2 motu 2408 mk3's and it made a substantial difference. Then I bought the AD16x and all my clock problems dissappeared. When I bought the DA16x, everything really came together, my monitoring and the 2 bus really reached their potential.

But of course this is only part of the equation. How are your on mics, pres and compressors ???

this is really why i want to get a folcrom. i dont do much tracking at all. the occasional vocal or guitar/bass here and there but i have a 512b, 512c, mono gama, purple audio biz, and bae 312. i like having these for different flavours and of course to see the rack filled up :D. this is another reason why i feel the folcrom sounds so tempting...getting these puppys to good use!

i mainly do electronic music, hip hop and a little rock, but everything is in the box and instead of getting a desk i really want to get a nice analogue summing box that will allow me to get my sounds out of the 896hd and give it that flavour.

im thinking...

896hd (for now until i can afford a da16x) 8 outs to the folcrom - to all the pre's and fx - through the fatso or ssl (still deciding if the ssl bus comp is worth the 3500 (its an xlogic not fx384) and into a trak2 or 2 channel ad converter.

im no newbie to recording, however i am definetly new to high end gear and figuring out a perfect set up to compliment software / hardware.

i really dont want to be using plug in's anymore as i like working on hardware to get my desired sound / character.

also, i hear the rms stereo bus compressor annhilates the ssl and c2 bus comps.

agh so much gear so little money haha

the price point on the rms bus comp is good though.

i got my xlogic g ssl from ams so i can still return it. im not sure if i really want to keep it though, and now that i hear the duende mix bus comp is probably even better than the new xlogic bus comps, it really makes me think.

I assume you'll need two identical pres for the folcrom, right ???
You have pairs in your api rack ???

Also, I wouldn't say the rolls bus comp " annihilates " the c1 , c2 , or ssl .... but the price is nice though.

It sounds like you need to get your hands on some of this gear to make an informed decision.

No problem since you're in LA.

you can rent some gear at :

Design effects

platinum audio rentals

rack attack

audio rents

sir ( sound instrument rental ?)

Their are soooo many I forget.

OR ... find a dealer who will let you take multiple items w/ a credit card number ...
and pick the one you think is best. ( if it does'nt work out you should only pay shipping )

Sounds like fun to me !!

ps ... the folcrom just came up as the banner at the top of this page ...... maybe it's a sign LOL !!!!!
