Germ Tone Control- Working With Gain/Feeback

Hello little slutties...

I've been working with my Tone Control- Mainly on acoustics and vocals, and I've gotta say... I love this box. Man is it strong! That's a great thing of course, but I've noticed sometimes the noise can be quite heavy when using a higher gain (lower feedback setting) and at the same time boosting the highs even just 1db or so. Also contributing to this is that I'm using a ribbon with a tube pre, thus increasing the noise floor. But I love the higher gain settings on some sources. Anyone else finding it challenging to find a good balance with the gain/feedback?

Another Germ EQ lover here.

Lucky for me, the noise floor is quite low here, so even with Gain fully clockwise and Feedback at 5, it's still ok to boost a few dB of high here.

Can't resist sound it gives when the Gain at full 10 v.s. any lower.

Most of the time I use it on bass which means noise isn't really an issue as I filter the top end post tone control.

When I have the active section engaged, it's amazing the lift it can give even with the gain at 0. Sometimes this is all my ribbon needs. I could use other quieter pres which i own, but I'm in love with the ribbon/tube/germ combo i've got goin' on my current tracks.

What's up Fletcher,

I love how it sounds on bass. That's what I'm tracking next!

What mic/pre chain have you been using? Do you mean while tracking or mixing? That's incredible that you're able to have the gain at 10 and feedbck at 5 with low noise! I agree... can't resist to turn it up to 10!

My recording chain for vocal is Brauner VMA - Brent Averill 1073 - Lavry Gold AD - RME AES32 - Samplitude 8 Pro. All the analog cables are Vovox.

While mixing, it depends on the source. Some sampled piano libraries have been processed with noise removal and leave ugly traces. It's hideous when you boost the highs with any eq.... The better the eq, the less ugly it gets, though.
