api, pacifica, great river, chandler, neve which do you prefer on electrics

recording electric guitars
mics I have
57's
e609 silvers
421's
414
c12
cascade fathead ribbon
royer 121
crowley and tripp naked eye ribbon

so I have a ton of cool microphones, but I need more pres. Did searches but didnt find anything for pop music. I love the edge, harrison, voxy ac30 type chimey stuff. Radiohead style stuff as well. I also dig alot of current type stuff. What is the preamp that you have liked best for this application.

chandler tg2, chandler ltd1, chandler germanium, a designs pacifica, api 3124, great river mp2nv, neve 1073???

these are my current options. would love to have em all, but budget was killed by the ribbon mic purchases.

I have recorded into all these preamps except the Neve and the TG2. All of them work. They'll sound different, sure, but they'll all work. Pick one and go.

API and Neve are classic sounds, of course. Some people will tell you to run into the Great River MP2-NV then out into a Chandler. Others will point you to Pacifica samples.

You've got all the right mics. Pick a preamp and start experimenting. Find your own sound. With those mics and one of these preamps, you'll find a good one.

I have the Api, Great River and Pacifica.. They are all great in their own way. Jasper said it best, you have the right mics..

Mic Placement will always be key, dont rest on the fact that they are great pre's and will fix all your problems.. Use your ears..

Also check out that new UA 6176, They updated the preamp section and it sounds nice as well.

Best of luck.

Exactly right.
Listen to Mike.
you've got loads of great mics..try some demos..pick one and start recording.
I have all the Neve,API,Chandler,Wunder,Telefunken..etc .they're all good.

I've recorded average players/rigs through Neve,chandler..Neumann,etc and it still sounds average.
Also recorded great players/sources through supposed "less than" gear and it still sounded great .

the combination of player/guitar/amp are ten times more important.
Have fun.

I agree that all of those pre's will work just fine. I'm sure a search will bring up a lot of threads though!

If you're really into that chimey AC30 sound then it will definitely be worth tracking down a good original JMI Vox (assuming you're not already using one of course!).

If you want something that will make a massive difference in tone, that would be it! I've owned a couple reissues before, but the first time I plugged into a JMI Top Boost the sound I'd been hearing on all those classic albums was instantly there. Amazing.

We've got a Bad Cat here that gets used quite frequently for just the sound you describing.

We've got the API and Great River. Both are "great" for this task, but the Great River excels, I think.

Set up is most commonly a blend of 57 (up close) and Gefell UMT70S (in a variety of positions and polar patterns, as required by the part and desired sound).

Hope that's helpful.
