Can you use the line amp on a compressor to power a mic or as an instrument amp?

It depends on what you are plugging into it - it doesn't supply phanto, power so condensers are out unless they have their own supply like some tube mics. I haven't tried my 1176, but have used my la2a with a 57.

Wonder if it would sound decent with a Rhode NTK. I know no one else seems to like those around here , but i dont have anything more expensive to compare it to so i like it.

Despite the hype around here, gear isn't the end all. Some of the biggest talkers around here do less than stellar work. We all have to start somewhere. Stick with it work as hard as you can and seek out knowledge and you'll be OK.

I say why not.....in regards to using an 1176 as a mic pre. I'm no tech wizard, but I don't think it harms anything. There used to be a UA 1176 re-issue at my place and I used as a preamp more than once. Usually with an SM57 on a loud guitar amp or snare.

Hell, I've even used my Lexicon200 reverb as a mic preamp.

Yes, it can be done, but you need a mic with high output (not so obvious with dynamics) and be prepared to live with some degree of noise.
But that's one "character" preamp for sure!

I think you have some 40dB's of gain in a 1176, but it gets quite noisy on the last 10-20dB's.

I use my 1176 as a preamp on the bottom of snare mic...works good with a 57 thumbsup It has more than enough clean gain

I have heard about ppl using M149 (which have high output) straight to 1176 then tape, to record drum rooms. I never tried thought.

Thanks guys. About the noise ishue, are there any compressors inthe same price range,
2,300, that you feel do the same thing as the 2-1176 only better. Less noise, same character. This will be my first and only outboard comp for a while.
Thanks.

If you'r talking US-$ I'd say check out the Purple Audio MC77, which is listed for $ 1650,- on their homepage. Many here on GS consider it equal or even superior to the 1176 (original and reissue). But it only has 1 channel
