Do you really need to ask?

Seriously, how many red flags do you need? Member since Feb-02-07, zero feedback, wants a bank wire transfer.. any one of these would stop me from even looking at this auction.... All 3 are in this one listing and there is really very little else here is there. Are you really still interested?

A bank wire transfer is the safest way to transact . It is NOT a wire like Western Union. There are full records of who sent it and who is recieving it from what bank to what bank etc. It's safer than PayPal that's for SURE!

So I asked the guy if local pickup is available. He said he's in Chicago, and he'd sell the item immediately for $2900. Any Chicago slutz wanna pick up a 47 clone for me?

SoundsGreat, you're kinda close, what is that 5 hours? 17 from here.

So we're going to have to do this deal "hostage negotiation style" or meet him at the water tower? No wait, Dealy Plaza.

I really don't think this guy is in the country, and even if he is, it's not a legit deal. If he's a real guy, it's probably stolen. So yeah, I don't think I would send a friend to get it. The listing says he's in Oklahoma, so right there is lie number 1. I just figured I'd shake the bushes a little, and see what falls out.

edit:

Oh yeah, the clone remark references a thread a while back where the owner of BLUE, basically copped to replacing every single part in some "refurbs" accept the serial plate. The thought of that puts me off putting money into any vintage mic Blue has touched. But even as a clone, it may be worth $2900.

Man, there is a host of items on stinkbay atm from users who haven't been active for a number of years and are suddenly selling their highend gear. Hmmm, 1073 for $750, Neve 2254a for around the same, a pair of Shep SN8's with rack for around $600. Jeez, it's so hard to choose. Boy that in the box stuff is sure bringin prices down hey.

Yeah, it's like sending cash with a record of the sender and receiver's bank info etc.. It's my understanding that once the transfer hits the receiver's account, there is no way in hell of getting the money back, unless he decides to send it back to you or you want to take your chances and chase him through the court system.

So it is safer than Paypal for the receiver, but definately not for the sender.

Any bankers want to chime in on this one?

Yeah! I saw those Sn8's too...Dodgy auction! Inactive account for about 5 years! No location! The guy don't answer my messages! And he removed the reserve he started with! What scary is that he knows what he's talking about ! or may be he stole the description from an old auction....

Damn, I asked him if local pickup was ok as I'd love a rack for mine. At that price I could fly over to get them .

PSW Recording Forums: Klaus Heyne's Mic Lab => eBay: How To Avoid Becoming A Scam Victim

And

PSW Recording Forums: Klaus Heyne's Mic Lab => Vintage Mics- How to Authenticate Them

I think that for ANY private purchase of hi-dollar vintage mics, and especially when dealing on e-bay, having the mic sent to a reputable expert to authenticate and check it is the ABSOLUTE DEFINITIVE ONLIEST option. Even seeing and testing the mic in person will probably not tell the whole story, unless you happen to be a
vintage mic expert yourself.

You'd have the seller agree to send the mic out for inspection, at your expense obviously. If the seller refuses to do it then simply pass on the auction. This would mean first paying for the shipping of the mic and that small investment will be necessary and I guess acceptable if you're planning to spend that much money on a mic.
