Hey,

any idea what these overheads could be? Some Neumanns?

I don't think there where U87 (even early one's) with that kind of a plug. It is a typical plug for tube mics. The 87 from my understanding had XLR, or maybe Tuchel on very early one's but not that big plugs. So I guess it is not a 87 and also not an U77...

These are U67. I´ve been to that studio in Switzerland. Lots of vintage Guitars and Amps there!

Hey Niko,

which studio is that? I thought that was some guy's private studio in the US... Just heard his recordings and loved the sound. Nice to hear that thing is in Switzerland - around the corner here. thumbsup

The rest of the drum micing is funny/weird, too.
Sennheiser MD21 (omni) as snare-side "underhead" and another on a gooseneck by the floortom.
And what's that 50ies-Sci-Fi thingy between the bass drum and floortom? I've seen it before, but can't remember the make.
Anyhoo, would be cool to hear that recording.

Nope, other side, between BD, Floor tom and ride cymbal.
Shiny metal, with a kind of grill?
I know it's a mic, but which one?

Definitely U67. You can tell by the body shape, which would tell you it's either a U67 or U87, but the plug on the bottom shows you that it has it's own power source making it the U67.

Here´s the website of the studio: Stratozoo Vintage Recording Studio
Much cool stuff there, including a tube mixer and many U67s, no U87s...

The Sci-Fi-Thing is an Electro-Voice Microphone, seems to be a close brother of that commen "Elvis"-model... I don´t know the definite number.

Niko,

tried to contact them but their e-mail doesn't work. Do you know of any other recordings made there that are available? Would love to hear more of that sound

Actually 87's have a different tuchel connector than the ones in the photo... the mics in the photo are definitely U-67's or M-269c's [and seeing as M-269c's ain't too common... I'd bet they're 67's].

Peace.

I'm sure these are U67s, because their website says they have them, but from the looks it could also be U87. The connector format was the same on U67s and U87s for the first few years after the model change, except on tube mics you naturally have a couple more pins working.

BTW, I find the guessing about the micing technique and the position of the mics on this particular photo very very funny. , thx for making me laugh.
Has anybody asked themselves if this wild array of mics is maybe made up for the photo, and not necessarily for recording?
Starting with the OHs pointing into the room rather than at the kit, maybe?
Just 2 cents.

What is that? Random mic placement? "Hey, make sure you get the 67's in the shot"??? If there's some plan there, I'd like to know it.

Thx, yes I was wrong with my statment that because of a big tuchel-plug it has to be a tube mic. I even looked at my U77 and it had that kind of big tuchel plug, and not an XLR. Funny, I never noticed:-)
