High quality crappy sounds

remember the days of putting a one channel mini disk recorder in front of a band, and then listening back and thinking, wow, that's kind of awesome... yeah it sounded crappy, but it was also super punchy and had a certain vibe that was somehow appealing....

well, what kind of gear would you use now to recreate that feel? although this time you want a little less hiss and a little more presence....

in other words, what high end gear would you use to get a good lo-fi sound?

Didn't MW record a drumroom for skid row with the internal mic of a Powerbook?

I have been reading the Tchad Blake forum... in which thread does he talk about lo-fi techniques?

I've used the internal mic from a PB for tracking before, and I also used my Walkman Pro cassette machines with a cheap one-point Sony stereo mic many times for drum ambience. Sounded awesome.

What about a 57 through a germ with a high FB-setting then slammed through an 1176!!!(All buttons in)

Hmmm... Forgot, a 57 is not 'high end'. Try a 121 instead!!!

Best,

If you want it to sound like an 1885 "Graphophone" using wax-coated cylinders incised with vertical-cut grooves, the Loop Junky pedal can do it. Adjust vibrato /warble) and tone to taste. Maybe a filter pedal too.

here's mine
