Is it me or is the c800g well overpriced??

Don't get me wrong it's a great mic, but after using it for awile, it seems to me that the quality of the mic is nowhere near the price of it. I think for the quality it should be near $2500-$3000 not over $6000-$7000..
Anyone agree with mee??

to me the c800 is a hot product, but you are right and i go one step further: to me the best mics, and the c800 g belongs to them shouldn't be prived over 3000 or 4000 bucks!

the market is full of hot mics that cost less. so a price of more than 4k is totally unrealistic

i dont think a Lamborghini is worth $$400,000...so i didnt buy one

My customers think the mic is well worth it...some consider it the best purchase they have ever made...cause it brings them business.

did you buy it because..

a. someone told you to ?
b. everyone else was ?
c. you actually listened to it & liked it ?
d. you just wanted to be kool ?

you have no legit frame of reference...from your other posts...it seems as what you need is knowledge...something even an excess of cash cant buy

No reason to feel stupid, that's definitely a very nice microphone. A lot of prime cuts have been made using that mic for a reason, and it isn't the cooling technology. Keep it. The more you use it, the more value you will get out of it.

All the best!

its a great mic.... I'm sure youll love it in time. Ive used mine for a few years and it has nevr let me down... very clear and present. Regularly beats a lot of other mics in shootouts.

the cooling technology really is only a hunk of metal...no big new technology there.

the price is probably in that huge power supply, twice as big as any other mic.

and maybe its just ours, but the c800g breaks ALL THE TIME. bad tubes, bad power supply, all that BS.

Probably the cost of the mic is in the amount of specialized labor that goes into making it. There also may be a low yield of capsules that are good enough to go into this mic, which drives up the cost as well.

Regards,

John

Of all the mics in that price range, it's almost always the last choice. And rarely does it ever win a shoot out. That doesn't mean it's a bad mic. But what the post means is that for that kind of money it doesn't often hold up with the other mics in that price range. More often than not a U87 (a good one) will beat out a C800g. So it can be hard to justify the cost of the Sony mic at times.

And comparing it to a Lamborghini? It a good mic, but that's not a very fair comparison. To consider in the range of cars that the Sony C-800g is a Lamborghini? What does that make the ELAM 251? The space shuttle?

The short answer is no, it's not overpriced.
The mic just works and when something works that well, straight out of the box, on so many different styles of music... sometimes you can't put a price on that.

Its a great mic, but I think it is overpriced. For that kind of money I would rather have a U67.

Once you recorded with a 251 67 47 and a good C12, you'd appreciate how wonderful this mic is, when it works, I find it amazing.
Which pre are you using BTW ..?

Wow, that could be part of the problem.
The Martech is a fantastic pre, but absolutely no character at all.
If you use a pre with more individual character, I think you might actually like the mic a lot more.
Try it with a 1073, the Pacifica, the Tonelux or the API.
All of those pres have a unique richness they bring to the mic.
My favorite chain is the Sony C800 to Neve 1073 to Tube Tech CL1B.

So the Lamborghini is the hottest car, because it is the most expensive one?

When it comes to quality issues and number of handmade things on the car I would say the Lamborghini is overrated and a Porsche offers much more for your bucks. And it is cheaper! So which mic is that one?

I will kick anyones ass if she or he say Behringer!

And please remember that Sony has to feed a lot more hungry mouths than Neumann, Brauner, Peluso...

No car is better than a Lamborghini, regardless of price. I guarantee a Lambo will get you 100x more skirt than a Bentley or a Porsche, unless you're chasing tennis wives!

The only other car that comes close is a Bugatti, but not even that has the panty elastic-stretching capabilities of a Lambo Murcielago.

.
Not to turn this into a car thread but all "car people" know that the Ferrari is the end-all be-all. By far the most respected. There's really no argument in that community.

As far as the Sony goes, WHAT IS IT WORTH TO YOU? I'd probably pay $1,000 for an SM57 if that's what they were asking because on guitar cabs it give me the EXACT tone I desire. The U87 on the other hand is pretty much worth what I paid for it (1700) which doesn't stop others from spending 3K.

I have driven a few Lamborghini's and owned a 308 Ferrari and 911 Porsche in the 80's.
The Lamborghini is the most impractical car I ever driven.
It may be because I am 6' 1" 250 lbs., but that car (no pun intended) drives me crazy!

I don't view cars the way I view music production. They couldn't be more opposite. Cars are trivial to me: "Point A to Point B, Don't Forget To Look At Me!" but they are a fun way to mess around.

Lambos aren't made for driving. They're made for showing up in. Driving, you say? That's what McLaren F1's are for, baby!

Apart from that, I'm 5' 1" and 100 lbs.

Ok, i'd say try 1073 as some already mentioned.
I like it with a pendulum Quartet II personally but its quite expensive (worth every fkn $).

In the 80's, no question... my Ferrari was a head turner.
It was the Magnum P.I. era and I was straight outta college driving those cars.
But after my first tune-up, ($3,500), I bought my 911...

The C800g is an odd mic. It's the absolute wrong mic on most singers I put it up on. However, on some singers it's just pure magic and nothing can touch it. I've had the most success with it on breathy female vocalists.

It's also pretty great on acoustic guitars, although I prefer an SDC for that these days.
