Your fav 500 series comp for snare?

I'm going to be building some "drum channels" to use on mix down using 500 series modules. I quiet fancy the new buzz audio Potion FET comp for snare. Would love to hear what you guys are using though, API525 for example... any good on snare kick???

Thanks in advance

Steve

No one is building drum channels for mixing.

Its a quick way to paint yourself into a corner into a "preset" style of mixing which becomes stale and boring pretty quick.

Also no one "preset" works for everything.

I'm not sure you understand my aim. I'm planning to sum/mix via either API 8200/7800 or SSL Xrack and simply want a selection of 500 series comps & eqs in the signal path to form a "drum channel". It's doesn't mean to say I'll use the same combination everytime, that would be some what narrow minded. The snare or kick may instead go via a Massive Passive and my C2 for example. I'm using a Soundcraft Ghost at the moment which I know won't give me the "Big console" sound and I ain't got several £100,000s to buy an API legacy+ or an SSL XL9000 so I figure this is the next best way to go!
I was simply hoping for some comments from folks that have used 500 series compatable comps on snare/kick etc

There are only 2 compressors in existence for the 500 format.

So right now its either one or the other.

The 525 is used mostly for vocals or acoustics.

The Buzz is so new i don't think anyone's really put it through its paces yet.

Your best bet is to probably buy 4 of the new SSL classic E channels. Two for snare and kick and two for toms.

Although obviously not in the 500 series format......it's hard to beat a dbx 160x on snare for the price. IMHO

This is the High End bro...no one sweats the prices.

And the 160X's to me are like a last resort...when all of the good stuff is used up you look to the bottom of the rack to see what's left and then its oh!!!!!!!!

I still got one of those things still in the rack. I guess we get to actually try it on something.

(Just kidding folks....okay maybe half kidding).

3 comps, buzz audio now do 2. The new FET based "Potion" I am quite inerested in. I think OSA are just about to release one too.

If you rate the SSL comps on drums, maybe I should look at the dynamic modules that they do for the Xrack along with my summing. You could be right because I've used my C2 on snare before and that's fairly SSL'ish. Didn't like the C2 on Kick though. Although it tighten the kick up nicely, it seemed to sap too much weight from the sound for my liking. Strange really because it works well on the mix buss and I like it there .
