Hey, I was just wondering what people's experience/opinions of the CAD VX2 (and Cad overall) is. I've seen the going price of this beast and I've read a few reviews. They seem pretty good. I have the opportunity to purchase two for less then half the cost of one. Any insight would be very helpfull. Thanks, Arturo..... |

infact, it doesn't seem to matter what I type in the search field: "Cad Vx2", "Cad", "Vx2", "Vx", "x" all seem to come up empty. If anyone knows of a thread on this site, perhaps you can link it in here...i seem to be having some trouble. thanks. |

Well since you can't get the search to work, here is my take. It's a great sleeper mic. Very smooth sound, not hyped in the upper mids. It sounds great in omni and has many instrument and vocal uses. I am not sure if it would be a good choice for a hard singing rocker (never used it for that purpose) but it really is a great mic. I have had a lot of success using it on male and female vocals, violin, trumpet, bone, sax, acoustic and electric guitar. It hasn't been my first choice for acoustic bass and kick. Good luck |

There have been a few CAD mics that I've actually preffered to the mics they were modeled on. Like the big kick drum mic - I have that, an E602 , and a D112. Guess what my go to outside kick mic is?

I sent you a PM letting you know that if you don't take them, and if they're working fine, that I would probably take them off the seller's hands. I own a pair already! The VX2 is a great mic, and in fact is still my go to mic for vocals. I have literally never put it up on a vocalist and thought "hmm, that needs to be replaced" as it is so complimentary to as close to "everything" as I can imagine. I've used on drum overheads, acoustic instruments, room mics, you name it: the VX2 is an excellent mic. The OS125 (1.25" diaphragm) just kills on voice. Sleeper is correct, nobody knew much about them when they were being made and nobody bought them. When CAD discontinued the mic 3 years ago, it had been 6 months since they had any inquiries on it (I was told). What a shame, I'm glad I have a pair myself. Best of luck, and let me know if you don't pick them up. Oh, and I don't know that they modeled the VX2 after anything. Maybe its compared to a U47 on internet message boards, but I don't think CAD was making a clone of anything. It doesn't sound like any U47 clone I've ever heard! War |

I've also got a pair! The most 'rated' LDC mic in my locker is a mint U67. And I'd say the VX2 is probably closer to this than a U47 type mic. However, the VX2 will often win out over this mic. They excel on virtually everything - vocals and instruments. I'd quite happily own a 3rd - and my mic locker is looking pretty good these days! |

The only CAD mic I've ever used was the E100. The first one, I guess. I got to say, I miss that little bugger. Great mid range. For the $200 I paid for it (new), I miss having it as an option. For some reason, and maybe you can answer this, War, but I get the feeling that today's CAD is somehow different than yesterday's CAD. I don't even know why I think this. Is there any reality behind that?

VX2's are the sleeper mic. No comparison to the CAD of today.

| OK, I'm going to one-up all of you -- I have three, but one is w/o a PSU. So, is that 2.5 mics?? Anywho, big thanks to Warren for helping me decide on my first one. The first time I used it on vocals, with the 125 cap, I knew buying it was the right decision. I bought this mic for vocals, not intending to use it on anything else. However, a few weeks ago I popped the 110 cap on the mic, and recorded some acoustic guitar. Holy head-amp Batman, this thing was singing! If you haven't tried the smaller cap on acoustic guitar, give it a shot -- Really nice, full, laid-back sound! I like it about two feet in front of the soundhole. Most of my mics get too woofy in that position, but the VX2 just eats that low end, and shyts-out a beautiful tone. So, I had to buy another one, and wound up with three I can easily picture using the smaller cap on most acoustic instruments.

I use the 1.1" capsule on acoustic guitars pretty regularly, it delivers for sure. We need to keep hyping these things so I can retire when I sell my mint condition pair...! War |

BTW, when I bought the second mic, it was 5 serial numbers different than my first one. It's like I was meant to have it -- now there's some GS rational for ya! My Serial Numbers first: 700 second: 705 third: 116 Any idea how many of these were made?

any idea how it compares to a blue cactus on vox? im interested in the cactus for depth as my vocals can be a bit bright. Maybe the VX2 has the same depth but is more refined overall??? any pointers welcome |

At AES last year, I asked the CAD engineer at their booth why they don't make the VX2 now. He said it would cost too much to manufacture now and with the history of VX2 sales, it wasn't feisable to manufacture. I told him that I thoguht it would be welcomed into the mic world much better now with it's reputation. I wish they would make it again. |

See one of Fletcher's recent posts about what it takes to keep a microphone line running. I'd be a bit scared as a big company trying to introduce an expensive new line. It might be easier for the home-brew fellow than the larger corporation. The newest edition to the CAD line is the e100S which is a fine mic, and (mostly) made in the US. I think that is the most we can wish for the time being. - Jim

Great Microphone The VX2 and their other high end tube mic (the grey one) were/are both excellent and I own both. I have considered getting a second VX2

I have a pair of VX2's and love em. . . Are you guys changing the caps out a lot? I have 2 of the 1.25's and a single 1.1 that I almost never use. Man a pair of these guys on acoustic guitar is just special. Great vocal mic as well, this and a SM7 or PR-40 will cover pretty much any voice out there. |

Any idea of what they sell for, used (duhhh) now? I did a quick scan of the usual URLs and came up with nothing. Most curiously yours, Ward

| No. Hardly use the 1.1 capsule. Two years ago I bought another new 1.25 capsule of CAD, costs $499 then. Quite a lot IMO but I think it's worth.

I was able to buy a messed-up (completely) 110 capsule just to get the headbasket. I plan to put one of Tim Campbell's CK12 capsules in it as a side project.

i got my VX2 back in mid 2007. it was used at the time and had a couple issues. i managed to get it repaired (by CAD) with no cost to me. came back working like a charm. i wont say what i paid for it because i'm not trying to make enemies here, but i will agree that it is certainly a sleeper. a fantastic mic in so many ways. s/n: 412
