Thread Starter | Removing hard T's and pops from main vocal
Working on a meditation album. Any suggestions on removing the hard t's and pops. Already recorded, so re-recording is not a solution. Perhaps my lil req de-essers are the best solution. Any other ideas? THANKS, AB |

For pops, a deesser isn't going to do you much good. Best bet is to either automate or offline process EQ on the offending popping consonants using a high pass filter, you may need to roll off anywhere up to 200 Hz.

nothing will sound as good as cutting and pasting clean t's and p's, but you gotta be good with crossfades and timing to pull it off. other than that, hipassing the crap out of just the syllable will work. gregoire del ubk . |

I'd try cut/paste first.

When I get hard T's editing dialogue in post I usually cut out most of the offending spike visually (in protools) where it's at it's peak and then bring the regions together and stitch them back up with a tiny crossfade. Smooths it out wonderfully most of the time. I'll zoom right in and usually only have to cut a few milliseconds to make it sound better. For pops I do basically the same as the others have said with automated high pass, but I would copy a P that doesn't pop if it's not hard to find and it works. _ |

I always use "change gain" in Pro Tools (or Logic). Just lower the spikes of the "t" or "p" (or breaths, sss or whatever). Easy and fast. |

I've been amazed recently at how many times major artists let pops go out for release. Lately, I've heard them from Barbara Streisand (hey maybe everyone's afraid to tell she has to do it again!), Barry Manilow, and I think as I recall Rod Stewart. These were noticeable "P" pops and it sounds like nearly nothing was done to eradicate them. I use change gain too, or just a draw a ramp up....seems to work. Tom H |
