Mic/Pre/outboard guess on new Incubus?

Anyone wanna take a stab at what the vocal chain was on the new Incubus tune Megolomaniac?

My guess is u47, 1073, Dimension D, and maybe some other EQ in the top end.

Very cool sound.

cheers,

kt

Recorded to Pro Tools?

Do you mean vocal sound when tracking or mixing?

SSL 4000g, a telefukin 251(they sang BG's through them) and SM-7 (Lead vocals), sometimes the Hitler mic... M160 on percussion...CDj1000, Koas Pad, 1200's... Little Labs PCP...buttloads of guitar pedals...

I meant the track/mix of the lead vocal..whatever they did in total to arrive at that lead vox sound.

BTW, e-cue, do you mean that the lead vocal was just SM7 and the SSL? It sounds like there is a Dimension D on there. And just the SSL EQ, etc? Sounds like a good bit of high end shelf, but the sheen on it is really intense and very attractive.

thx,

kt

That's why i asked.

How a vocal started out(tracking wise) can take a totally different path on its way through the mix.

To try to guess what was used to mix it is almost pointless, unless you ask the guy that mixed it.

Nah... I got all my info from what I gathered off the DVD. I know the bass player (ex-roots) mentioned "I play with a swollen pickle". Let's hope he's talking about the pedal.

Well, I dunno. I think we all hear vox or instrument sounds we wanna try to cop. Tweaking around trying to catch it is part of our fun. I guess I was asking how would ya'll go about trying to get that sound. Reverse-engineer it, so to speak. Besides the obvious of getting that vocalist.

Secondly, since one never knows who haunts this place, the producer/engineer/mixer or someone may be around.

It kinda reminds me of the sound Dave Grohl has on "All My Life."

I asked Rahzel about that the last time I saw him and he gave me a bunch of non-answers; "You know, he's doing his thang...".

Since Black Thought's failed solo attempt, that whole crew seems to be much more ambigious.

is the new incubus CD completely DESTROYED in mastering as the previous one?

because "Morning View" was such a dissapointing. it has ABSOLUTELY NO dynamic range whatsoever.
i've listened to it just a couple of times since i bought it more than a year ago, because IT HURTS to listen to it (specially with headphones). It's like listening to loud pink noise, really. They ruined it.

I really want to buy the new one, but i fear it wont be worth it, thanks to the 'special mastering touch' we all adore.

if it's like i guess it will, i'd just try to donwload it for free. It wont make any difference in sound quality to the CD (sheet).

and then they wonder why people dont buy records.
