what gear should you not stack next to or on top of each other...

just wondering what gear people have noticed that should not be stacked next to or on top of each other because it either causes added noise, hum or overheating of the gear.

i am worried about stacking my preamps next to my ad/da converters for the power supply on the preamps may add some hum, noise or something that i can not notice properly on the equipment next to it.

anyone notice any similar issues with their gear and have made sure they were far apart from each other?

I've never had problems with noise when stacking gear, as the stuff is pretty well shielded. I do sometimes get noise having external plastic ac adapters near audio cables.
As for the heat issue, I always leave a space above tube gear and converters, as those are the pieces that generally get really hot.

Any eq's with inductors be careful putting on top of things as they are sensitive to magenetic fields. Leave a space or 2.

how bout the great river me-1nv. that has a feedback issue or microphonic issue when its near speakers and the input level on it is set high. you think the power supply on it will affect converters or other preamps beside it?

I guess of from the school of thought: If I can't hear it, it's not a problem. I've seen racks of pultecs (inductor based EQ) in studios that produce huge records. I have a rack of Tubetech EQs and UA 1176s all crammed together and I don't have a problem.

I'd say if you're worried about it, just do a little experimenting with the unit before you rack it. Hook it up move it around to see if you hear a problem.

HUMFREES!

These little things are wayyy cool! I use them on EVERY piece of gear as it eliminates ALL intimate contact between your gear and rack rails. I HAVE NO NOISE!

AND I agree: leave a space for the tube and converters to breath. I also use the noiseless fans on the back of my racks. Never have heat issues or noise.

I also run power line conditioners, filters and ups.

I tried putting my console power supply and my smonitor amp in the same rack recently. The big power transformer in the PSU definatly crept into the amp and heard a very distinct 60 cycle hum in the monitors. I moved the amp and the problem is gone.
