Beyer m55 ?

I'm not so sure this is a "high-end" mic, but I figured this corner of the forum is viewed by more folks who know about the obscure stuff.

I think that the beyerdynamic m55 is a cool-looking mic. Unfortunately, I don't know anything else about it, other than the fact that they're pretty cheap. It's been quite difficult to find any real info on it.

Anyone out there know it? love it? hate it? feel "meh" about it?

I'm considering blowing a couple bucks on one, and if worse comes to worst, using it as a badass paperweight.

Any experience?

Mic

yeah, honestly no, this isn't exacly high-end gear I'd say....but I don't care, myself.

this listing has a bit more info on it

http://cgi.ebay.com/Beyer-Beyerdynam...QQcmdZViewItem

Judging by the frequency curve you wouldn't get tons of bass and treble, but enough for many uses. and it says it's sort of like an MD-421. For the price you might do alright with it for perhaps use on toms, electric guitar cab, or as a vintage-sounding drum overhead lacking high-end detail and low-end oomph, etc.

some paperweights go for more than $75 but I'd stick to around that price...but really, Beyer is a great company, it would probably sound nice for what it is..it probably has a somewhat large diaphragm like the 421

I'm not a humongous mic expert but I saw you out there, all lonely, and wanted you to know that there are indeed people who care here, even if some of them aren't the world's leading mic experts

I'm guessing this might be a cheaper version (built with some shortcuts) of the MD421? Say intended for your home tape recorder, perhaps

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

It's funny, I see them on ebay all the time, but after a long search I've been unable to find any firsthand info on them.

I figure it's either an underrated piece, or a piece of cr*p! Maybe I'll be the lucky (or unlucky) guy to find out for himself. Thanks again!

I did. I use it as a very badass paperweight. most of the time. It made a nice tabletop talkback mic for a while too.

Doesn't sound bad at all. It has a high noise floor, but it's a fairly creamy sounding omni dynamic.

I've used it on acoustic guitars and background vocals when I was looking for something "different" and was pretty happy.

Imagine a 635a if it was more pleasant sounding, yet somehow less useful.... but looked about 90 times cooler.

M 55 use

I like this mic a lot.
Use it in my standard drum setup as snare/main mic
(together with AKG D14 as OH and D12 as Kick).
It sounds as it looks. Vintage with cutoff but not sounding
edgy like a 421 would. Its more creamy and therefore
nice to record it with light distortion to obtain a well
balanced vintage drumsound. It serves me as the
Hatmic at the same time, giving it a nice compressed sound
with buzz.
So, if you can get one cheap, give it a try!
