KSP8/ADAT, DAC-1, 002: WordClock Recommendations needed-BIG BEN, Nanosync?

Picked up the KSP8 with the Adat card, a 002 and DAC-1.

I only work at 44.1 using KSP8's converters > that's mic preamp out >to KSP8 line in > routed to lightpipe out >into 002 into Pro Tools for tracking.

DAC-1 is coming off the 002 spdif out to monitors. I may try using the AES out from the KSP8 to the DAC to the Monitors.

I'm wondering if dedicated word-clock would improve things with this setup?

I'm looking at the Big-Ben or the Rosendahl Nanosync because they have AES, SPDIF and Wordclock outs. Would either units integrate into my system or would this be overkill for my setup???

Can the $ be put to better use , possibly the Rosetta 800 2 channel when it becomes available and use it's clock?

I'm still playing with integrating everything and trying different approaches. This is one serious unit! I'll let you know in a couple of years when I figure it all out!

So far, it appears it's gonna keep my boat floating.

Now to figure if it's time to waste money on a masterclock or put it to better use.

Seems everyone is having a hard time finding the ADAT Card. My buddy who is going to be buying a similar setup to mine has located more at www.macmidimusic.com

Certainly having a master clock like Big Ben would benefit most any digital studio as it syncs all of your digital gear to the exact same clock source. That being said, wouldn't it make more sense for you to just get a Rosetta 800 and go directly into and out of the 002? That'll give 8 channels of great conversion, a very good clock (second only to having Big Ben when talking Apogee gear) and the ability to do what you need to do without hassle. You can use the Rosetta 800 as the master clock and you can always add Big Ben down the road if you didn't want to make the investment in both right up front.

Hope that helps!

Just an FYI, but a seperate clock will not effect a DAC1 in the least. It is very happy operating on it's own. Thanks.

You're right but buying the Rosetta800 would defeat my initial purchase of this system.
It was intended to save money by using the KSP8's converters and get fx too.

I'm only talking clock because it's muych less than the 800.
I'm tying to figure if it's really needed with just 2 pieces, the 002 and the KSP8 and if so which one?

I am aware that the clock will NOT affect the DAC-1.

Leon,

what are you hearing as the limitations of your current clocking? I would feel that you should wait and get a feel for the strengths and limitations of your new rig before busting out many hundreds of dollars on some new clocking. Serious clocking may or may not yield a small improvement but it depends on everything else being up to par (mics, pres, monitoring, room).

cheers,
Ruairi

You convinced me! I guess I need to become more familiar with this rig. I do TOO much reading on forums and get sidetracked "sometimes" by "unnecessary" issues.

My reading has paid off though with giving me the best bang for the buck with this new setup. I feel I got my moneys worth because I got converters and fx all for the price of 1.

I'll put it to use now rather than look for problems!

Ben!

Get Ben! It improves whatever it touches.
I'm thinking of taking one on tour. Maybe it will make me play better.

It will improve your setup plus you can do cool tuning tricks.
