Thread Starter | Question on gear "chaining" approaches for the GS pros here ??
It seems that alot of engineers will use 2 or 3 different pieces of gear chained together to arrive at a certain sound, sometimes 2 different compressors, etc. I've been seeing this more and more lately that I've had the fortune of hanging out in some sessions that involved major players in the knob tweaking game. I thought it would be a good idea for the amateurs on this forum (like myself) to create a thread where the more knowledgeable fellows could share some of their secrets in this regard. How about some insights from the pros on this forum naming the gear "chain" and knob tweaking approaches to acheive certain sounds? Anything from biting vocals, larger than life distorted guitars, electronic drum samples treatment, kick and snare treatment, etc... it can be anything that involves a chain of more than 1 processor to get "that sound". |

Chaining gear together is different then multing/paralleling. Are you asking about different chains or parallel/mult ideas? |

I got the impression it was about chaining gear together, not multing. Sage, I don't know about chains to get "that" sound, cause I din't know what "that" sound is, but chaining things together is pretty standard as no one piece of gear will do everything you want to a sound. But it depends on the sound and what it needs, and who's making the sound you're recording yeah? One thing I do a bit with some stuff on the way in is go into my LA2A and then my 1176, but with no compression happening, primarily just using the amps. It makes a kinda gooey with sparkle on top, but it doesn't work on every thing and other people use them in the opposite order, 1176 first. Double compression has been used for years on lots of things (any comp into any comp) as 2 set on lower amounts of compression don't sound as obvious, and chaining eq's just depends on whether the first eq will cover all frequencies you need. I mean if you patch any eq into a Pultec it's gonna sound better IMO, but if I had every frequency I needed on the Pultec I'd only use that. Some chain fx to shape the sonics of the sound, like the original Space Station has converters that only go to 7Khz (although the analog circuit contributes as well), so it can be good to filter the tops of a harsh sound or harsh fx etc. I'd just be pluggin everything into everything and taking note of the stuff I liked the sound of. Don't forget impedance if you are using any older 600 ohm gear.
