Pacifica/Vintech/Great River/Buzz Shootout

Not the most extensive shootout, (one song) but here it goes. Here are the four pres without EQ or verb. I'll say which is which when the time is right...

Here are the four with EQ and Verb. Regarding the eq - I only took out offending frequencies...nothing was added. BTW - the pres are in the same order in both sets of examples. ie - Raw1=Processed1, etc.

All of these files were recorded in the same room, same mic, same chain after the pre. Peluso 2247LE=Pre=Distressor (3:1 5,6,4,6)=Rosetta 200 (Firewire card)=Cubase 4=UAD-1 LA2A/Cambridge EQ/Plate 140 Verb

3 had a weird filtery thing in the mids to my ears(I might like it a lot on bass). I really liked 4 though, the most involving and smooth.

all are pretty close...but I think #3 is not so smooth in certain parts of the vocal.
I only hear the Raws for shootouts.

Tough when it's a full mix...

HOWEVER, I like the overall sound and vibe you have going on with this tune - full, tight and clean... Nice job. Love to hear the final mix of this when you're done.

I thought 1 gave the vocals the most presence, which I really liked. 4 was just a tad too smooth for my tastes.

I didn't try the eq'd versions. I'm more interested with the direct sound - lets me know how much eq'ing i'll have to do later. I actually like the smoother tones.

From most favorite to least:

1
4 (really dug the sound, but a bit heavy for this mix)
2
3

And I'll fashion some guesses:

1 - Pacifica
2 - Great River
3 - Buzz (never heard one)
4 - Vintech

Very interesting...I think I see it like this - from fav to least fav...1 and 4 are different beasts, but they both eq great and end up sounding great. 1 and 4 are a toss up to me...there's really not a bad one in the bunch.

Thanks for that - 3 of the pres are on a possible shopping list for me (pity a Gordon wasn't in there) so it's got my interest. Great thread, great production/vocal. Which model Buzz and Vintech were they? I ass ume the GR was 1-NV.
3 &4 accentuated the sibilance but other than that there's no obvious stand out for me.
Cheers, Ross

Definetly what is really obvious is the great quality of PELUSO MICS!

Again, the raw files were much easier to judge.

Raw 1: Fantastic! Love this sound. Top and bottom, meat, presens. Based on your earlier shootout, I'll bet my beard this is the Vintech

Raw 2: thinner in all aspects
Raw 3: strange mids
Raw 4: less clarity in the lows but this one would be my second choice if I couldn't have #1

Since I've almost ordered a Pacifica I'm really curious to know which one it is. I hope it's #4

Now, do I get to keep my beard

You know, it's funny.

All I hear when I listen to these clips (raw only) is how insignificant the gear is when you have wonderful talent in front of the mic.

That's all I have to offer.

I'd be "somewhat" surprised if the Pacifica wasn't #4...and "stunned" if it wasn't #4 or #1... but I've been wrong before!

I'd say number one is vintech, 2 buzz( which I've never heard in real life so...). , 3 Great river and 4 pacifica ,I only listened to the raw tracks btw.

What I'll remember from this test is that I really like the vibe of the 2247le, I might pick one up for myself one of these days, I don't like it coupled with preamp number 1, too fizzy for my taste, but on all the others is sounds cool.

Number 3 is a little dark but I like it, not for this song but in a different context it could sounds just right.

The results please!!

2-3 tied
1 dead last, hated that one

2 and 4 sound pretty close but 4 is a little smoother to my ears.

Hhmm.. guessing here cause I haven't used all of 'm.

2 & 3 have that distinct neve buzz in the mids and are a bit nasal in the mids so I'm guessing these are the Vintech & Great River.

1 & 4 lack that iron buzz and are my favorites with nr 1 having more air and nr 4 being more in your face. So I'm guessing these are the Pacifica and buzz.

I'm going on one limb here and give it a go:

1: Buzz
2: Vintech
3: Great River
4: Pacifica

You can start laughing now
