Funny mixing technique!

I heard this the other day from a customer and thought it was pretty funny.....

set up the mix so all the instruments are sounding good and the way you want 'em.

.......bring up the main instruments each on its own group fader:

bass
guitars
drums
vocals
keys etc (where applicable)

Bring the musicians into the control-room and let them ride their own fader.......

press start on your DAW and record on your master-machine!

Let the battle begin!

I can imagine some pretty funny results like the volume rising 20dB thru-out the song.

Actually, the results could be pretty interesting, especially if you have something like apogee soft limit on your 2-buss......feel the agression rise!

anyone tried this?

That would be a great plan anytime your in a situation where people in the band are bitching about levels.

Let them do a couple of passes like that and then compare them to a couple of your mixes and see which comes out on top.

Who knows ?
With a good mix bus compressor and maybe some good levels to start with the Chimps might do good.

This kind of thinking can get you into serious trouble...

That reminds me on my first real studio experience. We recorded our debut album on a Soundcraft desk without any automation, so every band member had to control the levels of his own instrument during mix down. We ended up reseting the faders every half an hour or so, just because they all were up as far as they'd go. Ever since then I refused to have any other band members in the CR when the album gets mixed and this was one of the smartest decisions I've made in my whole life.

Wonder how long it would take before someone patched a 100 watt Marshall into their effect buss for a little more gain than everybody else.

give them each some sort of club/bat/cattle prod (a variety of weapons) for the other hand then sit back and laugh - maybe film it and make your own jackass.

I would pay to watch it.

Pick a band like mixermans "bitch slap"

The old studio where I assisted at had a band that wanted so much wierd panning and shit that the engineer allowed them to get involved in mixing. By the end of the night, the drummer was in the roll around chair twisting and rolling side to side while he panned his high hat and cymbals bouncing around within the mix.

The funny part was that it didn't sound that bad! Alternative music to say the least.

Before automation Roy Thomas Baker used to have the band send him sub-mixes that he was also mixing to the mixdown deck. He main trick was that the band members weren't mixing their own parts. For instance Brian May might be controling the drums etc...

Joe English, who was the drummer in Wings, told me a story about the "Band on the Run" era.

McCartney actually did it. He had each band member come into the control room and take control of their own instrument during a mix. All at the same time, in the same room. Cool, huh? So there sits Joe, with the drum faders.

Joe said that they were not even out of the first chorus before every stinkin' fader on the console was topped out, and they were all lookin' for a hacksaw to get the fader slots to go higher. They all fell out laughing and decided they would just let the engineer mix the record.

Brilliant!

Brian T
