compressor limiter ?

if i want to buy a compressor to run vocals or bass through on the way in, and i also want gear for the stereo buss...do i need a separate compressor, and a seperate peak limiter? or can i buy a compressor/limiter. i hear a lot about the LA2A...would buying this work for running vocals and bass through on way in, and on stereo buss for compression AND peak limiter?

i'm just getting started, and want to make a good investment in a compressor and limiter. also i read about the portico 5043.
