Crossed Figure 8's- Any problem with using two different mics?

I know I can try whatever I want and it might work out great BUT in an ideal universe should one use a matched pair for this technique? Comb filtering issues? What do I need to watch out for? Specifically I am thinking of miking acoustic steel guitar/vocalist w/ RCA 77DX on top (vocal) and Beyer M130 on bottom (guitar). I am also going to use different compressors on each mike so maybe I just answered my own question. Any way, any thoughts?

I've done this several times with an RSM-2 ribbon (voice) and an AT4050 (set to figure 8, guitar.) Works for me (did it mostly with this one country artist.) I wouldn't sweat the "matched pair" "same mic" stuff. Make sure you work with the placement, tho, depending on the singer, things can get a little nasally if you point the mic straight up his nose.

Good luck, and enjoy the results of a fun and rewarding micing technique!

Yeah, I would think it would only be a problem if you wanted accurate stereo imaging. Once you toss that idea, it boils down to what sounds right.

Not a good idea, unless you want the image to swim around like a goldfish in a bowl. You could try an MS setup with two non matched mic's, (assuming at least one of them is a fig 8).

I was thinking I'd probably pan them both to center, or MAYBE at 11 and 1 o'
clock.
