EMT 140 Plate in the Studio

WoW i just finished installing a EMT 140 stereo plate

This thing is Huge

Its in amazing condition and the sound is so much better than any digital attempt

Even though the noise floor is about the same as the Lexicons , I ordered the new Pickups from Jim Cunningham and also got a few spare clips and the tension adjuster\gage

i mixed a Jazz trio today and used it for the sax and wow! instant

Anyone have any plate tips ?

I just bought one myself. Solid state 140 stereo. It's changing my life. I purchased the Martin Sound upgrade for mine. Lexicon-what!?

I want to get an AKG BX20 now. I'm hooked.

Nice! Congrats to you!

I've never used the EMT 140 but I've had plenty of experience with three EMT 250s that were awesome (Clinton Recording in NYC).

Plate tips? I've got one.... Use it and love every minute of it!

I've come to the same conclusion about the sound of a plate than a digital recreation. I spent some time listening to a click going through each the plate and then a 960L's plate setting. You really hear the digital sound. However, to the Lexicon's credit, when I put the same settings on an instrument between the two, the Lexicon's plate setting suddenly sounded smooth when the instrument was mixed with all the others. But, the plate sounded better.

One thing that I'd like to compare is the some of the newer convolution reverb plugins against a plate. I've got IR-1 and the plate sounds pretty dang good.

Have fun. I have been using my EMT 140 mono plate for a few years now. It's really excellent.

After i got her up and running i A/b it to a small plate i programed for my lexicon, and with some high end EQ i had the real thing sounding the same but with more depth and random airyness... hard to explain but it doesn't break up in the highs even with a bunch of 16k in there

Lovin it

Thanks to all for the responses.. these things are well loved

vernier, Analog tape pre-delay from a nice reel to reel
im using a basic DDL now but i would like to have an old 1/4 Track machine for the tape delay, i used to have an old sony.... i dont even remember what happened to it.. its "Job" was tape delay and it was cool , it had the sound on sound knob so you could feedback the signal without having to patch in another fader

Quote:
SIGMA did you get a torque wrench?
No, i had Jim send me a tool/gage for plate tensioning... its not here yet
Right now it sounds fine so i dont want to risk snapping a spring till i get some spares

Jim is a super nice guy, and always has had time to talk with me, the noise floor is fine now with the stock pickups........ but everyone says Jim's are way better

Have you noticed a change in the sound, or is it mostly a noise floor issue

I have the pickups on the way.....

we suspended ones we had on the second floor on springs

the 4 we had in the basemet were on pads..[we had trolleys running outside]

booth sets were in isolated rooms.. before that we had some good effects from extraneous sound sources near the plates

glad to see they aren't trashed like our were when we sold the studio!

yup tuning can be a bitch ..esp when ya got more than 1

now all ya need is an ampex 300 or a Marshall Tape Eliminator on the front end for pre delay

did you get the remote for reverb time control?

bang on them sometime and sample the sound..good for FX

I'll second this. Some folks like the Marshall AR-300, though it tends to make the pre-delayed signal a bit more digital sounding to my ears.

A good slap/pre-delay deck is a Studer A810 1/4 inch. Some folks like to mix to them too.

nope, it was controlled by the remote but the top motor was gone and i couldn't afford the remote... but this one has the internal mtr so i could make a remote switch if i want to in the future, but i dont mind setting it by hand its not to far away from the control room

Well, perhaps it's a little more within reach than you thought...

Can't help you with the space thing, though. I'll let you hammer that one out on your own.

I was wrong about that. Clinton's plates ARE the EMT140s; NOT the 250's which are digital.
