Sony c800g went up $1000?

I saw on the sweetwater site that the c800g went up almost $1000. Anyone know why the price hike

That's doubtful. These prices are set by the manufacturer in most cases. It is most likely that Sony's price to the retailer went up and the lower prices you are seeing out there are from retailers who still have stock on mics sold and shipped to them before a price hike. Usually, the manufacturer will stipulate that the price changes as of a certain date across the board. It's likely (but I'm not guaranteeing) that the lower prices out there you are seeing are retailers who are no longer Sony dealers who are trying to move what they still have on hand.

Sweetwater has always been extremely fair price-wise and considering the continued level of support I have received before, during, and after the sale, I buy from them unless they just can't get a hold of something I need. I'll pay more to know I am going to be taken care of... but frankly, the C800G is out of my (and mosts) budget. Thank God I don't do material that would require I have one of those.

There's another rumor that Sony is getting out of Pro Audio.
If that is the case, all of their gear will go up in price.

apparently the materials used to build the c800g's has run out and importing has been banned so sony are out of c800g's

(I apparently got one of the last ones in production. I wanted two but could only source 1 new)

So sony are working on a new mic to replace the c800g with new materials and it should be out this summer, whether on not it will sound the same, i don't know.

And no one will like it because it's not the same thing, and so begins the "vintage" C800G era...

I believe you are referring to the new ROHS standards for EU countries. You cannot use lead, so manufacturers are having to use new types of solder which is harder to work with. These standards are also what brought about the end of the SSL 9000.

As far as price increases on the C800G.... I haven't received anything from Sony that would confirm a price increase on the mic, and my contact had units available the last time I spoke to him. But, I am on vacation right now, and things may have changed while I have been away.

Wink

maybe sony saw all the rappers wearing thousands of dollars or diamonds and decided they could get away with it. :)

MAP and cost did go up dramatically for dealers, pretty recently too. They have been backordered for months and our supply point on them says they'll be here around the end of this month. My take is that Sony probably isn't even keeping up with demand, and as few as they do sell why not jack the price? I'm sure the bling crowd will be PLEASED actually, a price drop would cheapen the C800G in their eyes.

For the for-seeable future, service is not going to be an issue.
Legally for 7 years Sony has to service anything they sold.
Not only that, but it's still a microphone, it can be repaired.

Well! You have a problem with your Neumann, you ship it over to them, and they fix it.
But if the parts for your C800G are not available, who are you going to ship it to?
You capsule failed? Sorry sir no more capsules... Then, you're gonna have to go for a "Wanna be C800G" capsule, but it won't sound the same...
