Sony DRE 2000 'verb - anyone used one / want one?

I have a Sony DRE 2000 Reverb and remote just removed from a studio, but can't find much info on it. Does anyone have one or know about them?

Sorry for the ambiguity, what I mean is that it is part of a parcel of equipment that has been sent to me from a studio for service and eventual sale as the studio is closing, it has not been toured. There seems to be no info around on this unit, I guess it wasn't very common.

80's 16 bit reverb made famous by the Alge Bros at Unique. Prices for them soared afterwards.

It became the default tom reverb.

Pre- cursor to the MUR-201, which was the precursor to the Ibanez SDR1000 and 1000+.

Eventually the whole technology evolved into one of my favorite series of effects..the "DPS-7" series(R7,M7,D7,F7). Which in turn became the DPSV-77.

I am big fan of 80's reverb. The SDRE 2000 can be a nice reverb on vocals. How much are you selling it for?

Ahh, I do remember it. A studio where I used to work around 83' had one. I was indeed great for drums and short room sounds in general. It was about the only time I was comfortable with recording fx on the track with guitars and keys.

Well worth having.

I am bringing it into the workshop next week to check it over and see if it works or needs repair, I have no idea of the value of a working unit. but I will post again when I have got it running and had a listen.

Hi,

I hope it doesn't need repair .....

We have a DRE2000 and I mostly use it on vocals to make them stereo, sometimes guitars and drums, mostly snare and toms.

Let me know if you need info on this. I have sold 6 of them over the years and can be helpfull with troubleshooting these things.
Usually the 1st thing to go is the mem board. You guessed it Sony no longer has that board. I have one in our rental inventory that is in great working condition. As for price it kind of depends on how much someone wants it. They had a big buzz again about 6 years ago but now people are sampling them.

Hope that helps

9k? The couple of people I have spoken to who have bought or sold them in recent years told me around $300 or so. I would be surprised if it were worth a lot more.

9K?

Maybe in the 80's when they(Alge Bros) created such a big demand for them.

Lately I've seen them between $300-$500.

The Alge Bros. did the same for the Vac Rac stuff.

When it was available people weren't checking it out(they prefered the Manley stuff).

Vac Rac went out of business and then it was written that Tom and Chris were using the Vac Rac stuff as part of their sound. Then bang!!!

Prices on the used Vac Rac stuff went through the roof.

I looked up prices a couple of years ago for the Sony.. and they were around 9k for a unit in good condition. There used to be some completed auctions on eBay where you could check out what they went for.

Yeah that's because some guy in Tennesse decided to jack the prices up on them(I think its RackNRoll). He based it on that Chris and Tom used them at Unique(which when it was there i did get to use it and thought it was ok).

I personally don't feel its worth $9k!!!

Its a total ripoff if you ask me.

Just like the price people are paying for the Shure Level Loc(which i sold for 4 times what i paid for),Spectrasonics 610 and all of the old broadcast limiters(Gates and Volumaxes). Just because Tchad Blake has at times used them, everyone wants them now.

That was me you were refering to. I didn't decide to "jack the prices up on them" the story as I've been told by Sony employees was they actually recalled these units and destroyed them making them very hard to find. So by nature (supply & demand) if you could find one of these units that worked properly it was expensive. Making the resell price expensive. The market dictates the price not the reseller. People will only pay what they feel something is worth. Believe me when I was in a pinch 6 years ago for Pultecs and had to pay $8300 for a mint pair it was hard to swollow but I needed them so I bought them. Some people are looking for a signature sound and like to have things that not all people can have. I just try to service my client's needs. I would be more than happy to share what I learned about these units with anyone interested.
Thanks

Hi Rob,

I didn't want to denote any wrong doing.

You are right in that people will pay for something they think they must have(like i posted i bought a Shure Level loc on Ebay for $150 and i sold it for $800).

But $9K?

A pair of mint Pultecs to me is decent for $8300(considering i paid $4K for a channel in not so great a condition). And also they are useful.

Thanks for clearing that up by the way!!! (I've always wondered about that).

P.S. Spank Factory?

Don't you think that's a little to Alge?

A little off topic but does anybody know where I could send Sony F7 for repair? It no longer has any sound output but does pass audio in bypass.

Thanks in advance!
