SRS labs MegaWide Processor

Has anyone used it:

http://www.srslabs.com/megawideprocessor1211.asp

I am thinking of picking one up to replace my Behringer Edison and was wondering if there is any feedback on it.

Just use your ears, twist the knobs and see how it sounds, see if it works for you and your studio

haha, Sorry, I had to

Don't worry my friend if i had one here i gladly would but the point was i was thinking of picking one up..

If i had it here and asked the famous stupid question..."i just bought the SRS blah, blah, blah on someone's advice here and was wondering how you are using yours?" Yeah in this case your very poignant advice would be appropriate.

Its cool and yeah its probably a reach around here. Thought i asked about something new or different. The discussions around here(High End) are just stale and boring.

Its the same shit over and over.

(Actually when GS went down a couple of days ago for the first time i didn't miss it).

I've been obsessing over the Megawide box ever since I read the thread about Wide Mixes in the Kevin Killen forum. I've searched high and lo and finally found someone who carries them. They're expensive ($1600) for a one trick pony box so I'll have to wait. But one day I will get one then all my mixes will be Double Wide! Nation-wide even!

Is that what he uses?

I thought he said he uses the Hughes SRS Sound Retrieval System AK-100 which is an older box from 1989. They also had the AK-200 which was around the same time. It was a box basically that would simulate stretching out the speaker width if you placed 2 speakers closed together. I've seen the technology used in modern boomboxes to simulate a wide image.

I know Hughes had the Pro-220 which was a rack mount unit unit as well which was out not too long ago for the studio.

I think the Megawide processor is fairly recent though.

Yeah you're right. Killen uses the AK-100. But I haven't been able to find that box and I searched the SRS website and found the MegaWide. Doesn't it do the same thing? I'm in the dark on this.

The Megawide does 3 different SRS processes:

1)SRS 3D

2)Voice clarity

3)Trubass

The AK-100 just does one.

1) SRS 3D

To be honest SRS stuff is ok. Sometimes it can work nicely other times it takes too much bass out of the signals. The cool thing about the Behringer Edison is i can choose how bad the loss is all round. Its pretty programmable. The bad thing is the sonics. Its a little on the bright and boring side. I am looking for a box with a little more heft to it sonically for the times i actually use it. If i can get Jim Williams to modify it it would be cool but i doubt he does Behringer gear.

FWIW, from time to time Im using the width control on the JoeMeek SC4 for widening stuff. It gets pretty out there if you crank it, and since it's MS it's mono compatible.

Have you used the Roland RSS stuff ? Or the RSS algos in their SD*-330 range ?

Spatializer ?

Just throwing in some options you've probably tried already...

Yes.

They all have their strengths and weaknesses. None are supported anymore except the SRS stuff so that is why i was considering it.

Doesn't Dangerous Music make a similar product? I'll have to check. (I guess I should have before writing this)

Thrill, I asked this ages ago. A friend of mine raves over it, but he's a product rep so I don't trust it. I could always have him send one over, and send it back if I don't like it. But with my luck, I'd probably like it, and I don't have the dough for gear at the moment.

If you want his info, hit me up on PM

Got one here. Not big on it, actually i think i hate it. that being said its very easy to mess things up. 3rd harmonics are pretty aggressive in this thing, and the voice clarity IMO should be called razor blade, very harsh. As for the spread, I never touch it. IMO its the worst feature on this thing. Its like one of those BBE thingamagigs. Mix the $hit out of your tune and forget about this thing. Hope that helps.
You can always buy mine.
LOL, didnt notice the date of the last post.

I bought one because I liked how wide jmh's mixes were, but it tends to run me in circles, the color it gives my mix is crazy , but the widest sounds tend to dissapear in the club, and with everyone using these software synths like nexus that are already super wide and out of phase this box can really destroy your mono playback, I don't use mine anymore, I want to sell it.
