| I know what I want yet have no idea what its called or how it works. Thats right. Please help me and bear with me. I'm building a home and will be putting together a home studio. I've been recording for the past 3-4 years with a stand alone DAW (Korg D1600). IT SUCKS. Time to step it up. I have decent out board stuff for now, 2 pres, avalon eq, portico 5042, lucid 2496 ad and da. What I want is a daw and a control surface(I think?(faders and stuff, lol)). I'm basically clueless as to what actual products I need. Help show me the way. Budget is appox $20,000 (need to upgrade monitors also) |

| Naw, I can go above the 20K for treatment. I'm going to build the control room to the ratios and Ethans site and will treat it accordingly after. |

| PC or Mac - that's the first hurdle. Do you have any computer experience? Familiarity with an OS will help. I've been a Windows fan boy for a long time, but my patience has basically been stripped bare. Starting again, I think I would buy a Mac. Heretical I know. Microsoft have made themselves rich by designing a fundamentally flawed platform, and then forcing customers to constantly apply fixes. This ensures there is never one stable version you can just buy and enjoy stress free. You become hoplessly addicted to Microsoft for "fixes" - every "fix" creating more problems. Once you are addicted, they are assured of a continuous revenue stream. I'm sure Apple aren't perfect either - but they seem to be far less plagued with viruses and worms and crap. Less options, higher priced, but sometimes you just want something that works.

Probably leaning towards Protools just cause its the indrustry standard. I know it costs more but I don't want to worry about it. Protools and mac kinda go with each other, right? | |

| get a mac my friend. every pc i have used seems to start having problems real soon. i know someone who just bought a new laptop and after the 2n week its having problems. Ive had a powerbook about a year now and it is jut perfecto. be aware i havent been using computers professionally for that long maybe about 2 years but im sure most users who have used pc and macs would say the same thing. Every major studio i know uses macs that must tell you something. I have no idea about the answer to youre original question though. good luck |

| omg! i have a D1600 too! It was my first recording experience when it came out years ago =] if you figured out how to use that thing then mac or pc will still be easy. that thing was killer for a noobie like me at the time. to be honest, your pc will be fine as long as you know how to take care of it. some retards will blame windows for hardware issues...but whatever makes them feel more comfortable. and as mac gets more popular, viruses will start to be developed for it anyways. Anyways, I wouldn't go with protools unless you're trying to build a business. If you're getting protools (simply for clients), get a U87 as well. If you're just recording yourself and your friends then neither is necessary. so...music going in then to music coming out... Microphones Preamps EQs, FX, Comps A/D Interface Compooter Software Controller D/A Monitors and then there's lots of products in each section. Computer based DAWs...would include computer, software, interface, and convertors. To start you off, look up Lavry, Mytek, Apogee, Universal Audio, Lynx, RME for convertors and interfaces. Those are some popular ones off the top of my head. Software...Cubase, Protools, Logic, etc. Controller...look up Mackie Control Universal or you may instead want an analog mixer Monitors...ahhhhh there are too many out there... People will probably chime in with ones I've missed. If you're looking for high quality sound then upgrade items earlier in the signal chain. Instruments Room Microphones and preamps (don't ask which of the two is more important...it will start a pointless debate) A/D I think that should get you started...

| I really think you are pissing your money away with Protools. It really does not make sense unless you are actually making money with your Protools rig. Put your money into a nice set of mics or outboard instead. Get Logic or Digital Performer with a MOTU box, hook it up to your Lucid converter and get a pair of Dynaudio's, Events or Adams (or the monitor flavor of the month). You'll have to fry in the monitor hell pan for a while and listen to everyone one say you have to listen to the monitors and decide for yourself (of course lots of times you can not listen to a demo pair and just take the plunge based on the stuff you read here) --- but heck it's fun spending money. And definitely a Mac in my humble opinion. Have fun!!! $20,000 is nice chunk to spend. Please don't blow it on Protools and find out years later it is worth next to nothing and kick yourself because you could have purchased some nice outboard or mics which tend to hold their value much better than the computer stuff. |
