Lindell,
Have you bought a 9098?
BTW your website says there's ADT stuff in your facility now. Mastering stuff? How do you like them?

Jono,
Yours might be the first studio with a Custom 75. What are your first impressions and what does the board resemble sonicwise?

Well, given it is serial nbr 001, I believe it is the first one (actually, I know that it is..). Your question is a good one - and a bit difficult to answer. There are so many variations possible with this product - xfrmrs can be added/ignored in so many places - that in all honesty I have not been able to assess the various combinations. Frankly, we probably never will... I can report that: 1. adding/removing the OP xfrmrs when tracking has a significant effect (positive or negative depending on the application) 2. That adding xfrmrs to the final stereo OP has an immediate effect (one you would expect), and 3. adding xfrmrs individually (retro button) to channels during mix is very subtle...dependent upon program material. When you punch 'retro' for all channels - the effect is immediately noticeable - but individually not as much. As an objective observation, the lo-end is great great great on this thing. After a few beers with the designer (he was onsite this weekend for 3 days) he was not surprised by this observation - in common with vintage Neve characteristics. EQ's are VERY nice. Apparently there is a hi-band in the original 1081 circuit that has been 'fixed' - clips in the original - but I can't comment on that because I don't own any 1081's. The 'modern' mix buss, and the 'modern' pre's (bypassing the OP xfrmr) are very clean, as one would expect. Very nice, and very useable. To me, tracking/stemming to 'retro', and then mixing with a clean, accurate environment will probably be the ticket in the end.

The software portion of the console (control room, various solo modes, etc.) have been a work in progress. Good progress, but still a work in progress. Hardware wise, given mine was the first - there were some mods that needed to be done (not many, really) - that make it consistent with those being produced now. Given my position in production (1), the fact that they came all the way from AU to execute the fixes is indicative of the commitment they have to my console. Truly amazing that this thing originated in a guy's head, and is now a physical reality.

Probably not the right place for this post...but since you asked! Jon

jono,

thank you for your detailed reply. I'd suggest you to start a new thread and paste everything you've written here. You're on the fortunate position of being the first owner of a totally new designed console, and one that raised quite a lot of controversy over here as it was first announced.

I'm glad the console sounds great. As for the initial quirks, they're normal on a product that just came out of the owen, specially when it's the first one to pop out. This has happened with pretty much all manufcturers.

I'm very curious to hear one. If it really has the balls and sound of an old Neve, a 16ch model could go very well as a sidecar for an ITB guy I know.

PS: why did you hang the Tele and the Precision, and I do literally mean hang. They're so up there not even Pau Gasol can reach them. Did they behave?

Yes, lots of controversy. And as a result, the gent that designed it has no interest in participating in these forums, which is unfortunate. There is a huge amount of knowledge of modern and vintage circuits there, and a lot of in depth measurement and testing of both that went on when building the prototypes for this thing. But he prefers to lay low and let the sonics speak for themselves, i guess. Anyway, to your point, I had not intended to post anything more until I had been thru the first mix sessions (tracking is done). Think I'll wait until that is complete, then consolidate my thoughts. It is interesting you mentioned the sidecar concept for ITB shops...my view is that an 8 ch configuration, while expensive, would be unbeatable for a higher-end project or ITB environment. The CR, the pre's-eq's and all the IP's available at mix would be pretty slick, IMHO.

Sorry - missed this part about the hangings...yes , they behave! Only so much room, so I have to keep them (and others) from being kicked around!

Naah, still rocking the 88R.

ADT is up in the mastering room, I hear they sound clean and good.

Factory built SSL 4000 E series, Two channel Demonstration console, now upgraded with G series 242EQ and G line amps.

Internal bantam patch and mini 651 center section. I believe it's one of four or five built. Vu's meter either the channels, or two buss.

Flat would be an improvement. Have you really looked at that thing? It's actually the only ass I have ever seen with a negative slope. I saw it in a bikini and you could not tell where her legs ended and her ass began. Unexciting is a complement.

Hi, it's a 5 amp supply, about 30cm x 15cm x 15cm, so small and silent. :-) It has the same pinout and connector as the larger models.

Well... I don't know if this one goes in the "Top 10", but it very definitely goes in the "sexiest" part of this thread:

Lombardi mixer - Italian late 60's technology, 12 channel, with gain, 2 concentric aux/monitor sends, separate echo send, 3 band (inductor!!) eq & panpot on every channel, in-built 4 head tape echo!
Real wooden side panels, big VU meters for L/R (btw physically placed on the far left & far right side of the mixer!) and for the 1/2 or L/R monitor sends.

A little legend.

Comes with its' own multicore & stage/breakout box with mic inputs (no input connectors on the mixer itself, only outputs), and with its' own... magician's trunk (talk about "flight case" in the 60s)!

Weighs in at 66 kilos.

The Lombardi company, a family run firm still buliding PA speakers, line arrays, a couple of mics and very, very fine point-to-point wired all tube guitar & bass amps today, in those days was a common name on stage with the first 200W tube bass amp ("Il Nonno" - the Grandpa... Vintage pics on their website show it on stage with artists such as PFM, Lucio Battisti, or even The Jimi Hendrix Experience in Italy!), a truly legendary Leslie (Brian Auger loved it), the still being made tube amps (the LC1 68, Giallino, Rossino) and providing PA for all sorts of acts & festivals, including the legendary Parco Lambro Festival, Area, Bob Marley, etc.

(I am in no way affiliated with the company, just did some research when I spotted the mixer, before buying it - and I think they rock)

The big room - Real World Studios

The SSL in Peter Gabriel's "Big Room" kind of does it for me. Frankly, pretty much everything at Real World Studios kind of totally does it for me...ahhh, dare to dream...

Fellow Glock owner, I see. I have a Bass Art preamp, which I use for DI. I run my hofner through it, then Aurora GTC2 comp and massive passive to 1" 8 track. Unreal bass tone. I bet your AG440 sounds even better though.
