DAV for rock?

Anybody used the DAV for rock, or on any projects where it was the only pre?

Thanks,
Jason

I probably shouldn't

I've actually got a few acoustic/rock/folky songs that I recorded for a client about 2 or 3 months ago in which the DAV BG1 was the only pre used. It was sent through the line in of a Studiomaster P2 console and through one of it's busses into my Emu 1820 interface.

Theres a bit of URS EQ (mostly the n-series and a- series graphic) and some asorted other plugins used, though sparingly.

I'm not near the studio computer (it doesnt touch the internet), but hopefully in the next day or two I can post some samples.

WARNING
The client that will be "featured" is a bit on the strange and untalented side.

Oh yeah,
If you're looking for harder rock sounding material,
Look in my signature, the song "mimosa" on the Hsunami myspace page was recorded with the DAV for overheads (rode NT5's) and for just about every other track on the song except for bass. - if you need a higher resolution, i could send you some .wavs as well.

Check this thread:

Where am I, and where do I go next?

In the afformentioned discussion, i was getting feedback on a particular mix i posted (3rd mix/unmastered). The recording is about 98% DAV, which was pretty much the only "expensive" peice of equipment used on that recording. I mostly write/record guitar based/rock music, and the DAV goes on a tonne of stuff. Im actually mixing a couple of things right now, and if i finish in time i'll post some clips to this thread...

Sounds huge, lots of gratifying low end that moves right outside the speakers.

I like it.

Hey thanks Chucho and Krizman!

Here is another example for the original poster; im in the middle of mixing this, and I tracked it using about 90% DAV amps. Incidentally, it's also the first recording i've done with my newly restored vintage hofner guitar!

Vintage Hofner!!!

It's got a twangy tone...but i dig it!

Thanks JackRabbit for the mp3s. The music sounds fine in its own respect, but I don't think these songs showcase the DAV very well if you want to compare with other preamps. The vocals are stacked and processed, so as I might not be able to distinguish the sound from what I could have got with the built in preamps of my FF800 (which I am looking to replace with someting better).

Anybody got something with a solo rock vocal in front?

Also what microphones etc were used?

Here are few vocal samples directly comparing API, Neve, Pendulum and DAV preamps:

I have listened to your samples before, but wasn't aware og this one. I tested the 4 samples not knowing what they were, listnening on my laptops built in soundcard and medium quality headphones which may not be the best, but is what a lot of people would use to listen to music. Pendulum came out number 1 and DAV number 4 in my ranking. Though I admit the differences were small to my lousy ears.

This is not the first time Pendulum is the winner over DAV for me. I have come to the same conclusion with instrumental samples too.

Now what? I am looking for a preamp for my Soundelux U195 and rock and folk vocals. Maybe I should go Great River after all.

This is a couple of verses and a chorus in progress. DAV represents 95% of the preamps used. The vocals are recorded with this old, dynamic mic i found. I would imagine it's electrovoice's version of the sm58...anyone know anything about this mic? I think it sounds good for the part, given what it is.

Tombuur - its good to evaluate stuff both by listening to individual tracks, and full mxes to hear exactly how things 'stack'. Even then, other peoples tracks/mixes are at best a rough approximation of things...when i was contemplating purchasing the DAV, the only conclusion i could reasonably come to via online samples was that "the DAV is on par with other quality preamps". Best of luck!

the mic

Anyone ever use this mic before? The DAV was pretty good at opening up the tone on this mic, versus a couple other preamps i tried it on.

I think you'll find that using all DAV pres on everything would be similar to using all Grace, Millennia, Sytek pres, in that they're all more in the transparent camp of preamps - although the DAV pres have a more euphonic sound. Great for acoustic, folk, Americana, legit, and even some pop and r&B. But if you're recording energetic rock music with any kind of balls to it, you're going to find the DAV preamps to be a bit lackluster, and really not provide the energy and punch needed to make the music really sound exciting.

Sort of like trying to use a Roland Jazz Chorus as a rock amp.

I'd suggest you look at something more along the lines of API.

My 2¢.

If you want the best, then you should definitely try Pendulum ...
