Distressor or Fatso???

I am plannning a mobile pro tools recording station. I will be planning the Pacifica Pre as my front.. Is there anyone who would think in this situation that the Fatso could replace the Distressor from a compression standpoint?? I know the Fatso has some built a compressor built in with pre-set curves... In a mobile situation, would this suffice as a compressor or would I just be better off with the Distressor?
I know the Fatso is no replacement for the ditressor if you are going to get into it, I was just wondering if it would be good enough in this situation to where it would make no sense for me to buy a distressor and a Fatso... Anyway, any comments would be greatly appreciated. Music type is going to be acoustic rock with male vocals...

The slutty response is: Get both anyway. How many channels would you need compression for? If it's more than two, I'm sure you could utilize them. You could use the fatso for something that needs subtle taming or some un-harshening in the highs, and you could use the distressors for tracks that need more critical/specific dynamic attention.

two channels max for compression... I guess my main question is to whether or not the Fatso is actually good enough as a compressor to stand alone.. I like the idea of have pre-set selection (set it and forget it) in mobile situations.. Keeps me from messing around too much. More commens please.!!..

Go for the Fatso. The presets are varied enough (and VERY good sounding) to give you what you need based on your post. Plus, you get all the other Fatso goodies....

Funny - it's truly Gearslutz - I would say the two distressors - way more options - Fatso is fantastic - but it lives on my stereo drum bus or guitars.

Also - I might look at 2 Dakings.

neither is the distressor a replacment for the fatso, they're two totally different beasts.

to answer your question, yes, the fatso is more than capable as a stand-alone compressor. i happen to love it for tracking, especially ( ) straight to digital.

Dakings? Are they as versatile and able to saturate like the Empirical Labs stuff?

Distressors are amazing - some people hate them - but they definitely have a sound. Are you positive you want that sound. If so - great purchase. The Dakings are more classic - around the same price range.

well no - dakings will not saturate like a distressor but I would try out a few pairs to see what sounds good to "YOUR EARS" in your budget. Taste is everything. Yes if I had to buy only one desert island stereo pair - it would be distressors for me - but that is MY TASTE. FATSO is awesome but again you sould demo it on some of your sources.
