Vintech 1272 Opinions for my first good Pre

I am into folk-rock sounds similar to Neil Young- After the Goldrush/ On th Beach and The Band. I am considering the Vintech 1272, Summit Audio 2ba, UA M-610. Any suggestions?

I've got the vintec's and like em. Their darker, but for the music your talking about they would probably work well. I haven't used either of the others long enough to comment on em.

Except the TG-2, Phoenix and to a lesser extent GR don't sound much like Neve.

who cares if they sound like neves. I have never used one so i guess I don't know what I'm missing. The vintech sounds great for rock stuff. I have a vintech 72, chandler, and great river and they get used extensively. I haven't heard the others on your list, but i think they would probably all work well. I have been meaning to look into a good 2 channel tube pre, but I think the transformer based pres are hard to miss if you're doing rock stuff.

I think the Vintech Dual 72 is a great sounding piece and it's affordable. You'll probably want to get something on the cleaner side for your second good pre. But who knows, I love character pieces.

I would seriouly considering this option before you make a purchase:

http://www.seventhcirclestudios.com/SCA/SCA.htm

look at the:

SCA 272 N72 preamp, complete, assembled 2 channel $1149

...on that page.

I think Geoff T commented that it's build looked more like what Neve themselves would have done, had they wanted to conver the 1272 into a pre. Also, if you scan that web site, you will see that getting it this way allows for some really cool future expansion into lots of variety.

regards,

kurt t.

Not to stray from the topic but has any GS heard the difference between the new Vintech X73i and the 1272.........if so how would you desribe the differences in the preamp sound.I had a 1272 for awhile and thought it was a good sounding coloured pre but nothing to get too excited about.I would not buy it if it is your first good micpre.....a good fairly neutral mic pre for a touch more mula would be a Langevine DVC .......It comes with 2 very nice sounding pre's,god shelved low and hi EQ an a Elop limiter that works greatThe 1272 is nice but would not want that much color spread all over my tracks.Just a thought!Good luck on your search.

I find the Phoenix pre strikes a nice balance between Neve "size" and smoothness and clarity. If this is your first pre I'd give it serious consideration over a more special use item like a 1272 or UA-610. It manages to sound big and beautiful without being excessively colored. It flatters every mic I own and I'd use it on anything. (I also have API, 737's, UA-610 and GR 1NV).
