I've been using a pair of Sony MDR 7509 for years now.
great accuracy, great comfort.

i'm using them 80% of the time and checking the mix on my Adam monitors the rest of time

get speakers. but anyways I've yet to find a pair of headphones that I like for mixing. K240's fatigue my ears in minutes, I have some k141's that I find a little less fatiguing bt they're not as good sounding as the 240's. I've tried the beyers a number of times and those might be my favorites right now.

I already have good monitors. I'm looking for headphones because I'll need to mix with it sometimes.

im sure the peoples choice around here (based on older headphone threads ive read)

would probobly be between the hd280s and some other product (i forget the model)

but since this is the high end forum..that could change...but i dont reccomend spending big bucks on headphones...i go through a pair a year probobly :(

I'm lovng my Ultrasone 650's.
They seem very accurate when switching between speakers and phones.

I'm looking at the seinnheiser hd280s, seems to be good. Would the Sennheiser HD 555 be better?

Pretty good. Clear and overhyped in the lows and highs. Great to psyche the bands !!

Audio Technica AD700 or probably any of the ATH-AD series for that matter, I just happen to own the AD 700s and love them.

I have both the Senn HD280's and the HD-25's - the 280's are what I give any guests for monitoring - as they completely cover / cup the ear. The 280's get too hot for me to wear over time and fatigue my ears. The HD25's are an amazing design - super comfortable - super precise - and I have worn them for hours on end without ever being uncomfortable. many world class dj's and producers prefer the HD-25's for their wearability, durability, comfort and overall quality - they are easy to slip off / wear on one ear on and off. The HD-25's list at $269 - I believe I paid $220. I got my 280's for like $120.

HD-280's:

HD-25's:

BTW - prior to the Senn's i used Sony MDVR700's and Technics - both fell apart after 1-1.5 years of heavy usage each

There are alot of good choices out there. I chose AKG701's and have not regretted it in the least. Unfortunately they have me wanting to upgrade my monitors now...

IMO. If you really want to mix with phones, use several pairs that have different sonic footprints. Grados, Beyerdynamics, Sony, AKG, Sennheiser. They all are different and give you, as a whole, something valuable to base 'some' mix decisions on. And mix mono with them as well as panned 9 and 3 oclock so as not to hear the exagerated stereo field.
Sorry about the budget issue.

check out this month sound on sound magazine which has an extensive article about headpone mixing. looks like open back headphones are better for mixing than closed ones. pretty cool article.

Yeah, like I said, I would suggest checking out AT's import series (ATH - AD700)

But.... I would definitely recommended open back whatever way you decide to go with

Finally we ended up buying 2 x NS10, 1 NS10M and one Auratone 5C for 700$ CAN! A friend of my singer had to sell gear to earn money quickly for a trip in Vietnam and we were at the right place at the right time I guess. He also gave us a Alesis RA300 amp. The deal at first was only the 2 x NS10 for 700$.

We also bought 3 pairs of Sennheiser HD280, I like them for recording and comparing A/B mix between headphones/monitors.

EDIT: And yesterday, I bought myself a little gift for my birthday.. A UAD-1 Studio Pak for 375$ CAN.

YAY!

I don't use headphones much for mixing but I use headphones often for learning parts for my cover band. Since I play the string and horn parts, getting the voicings right is important to me. Also, I'm the guy that figures out the vocal harmonies.

I've found that open backed headphones give the clearest representation of the recording. That I can hear mid range frequencies best with the open backs. I find that even expensive closed back headphones smear the mid frequencies and makes it difficult to hear inner voices and frequencies. the Closed back headphones hype the bass at the expense of the entire mix. YMMV

When I said "using headphones for mixing" I should have mentionned that this was regarding the final stage of mixing. Like when I'm doing the "production" and "fx" of the songs, like delays, radio echo, panning, etc. The small details that sometimes we can't clearly hear on monitors but with headphones it's "just there".

I also recommend getting a few pairs for cross-reference. My favorite headphones that I own are Grado sr 225 (the sr 60 are awesome and cheap too). Next (for me anyway) is Beyer DT 880.

I really like the super.fi 5s in ear monitors.

I've also used Senn HD 280 and Sony 7506 - it wouldn't hurt to have a pair of either around. More Me headphones work great for tracking - they have a stereo/mono switch on the side and they are $30!

Good Luck!

The Grado SR60 are an awesome pair of headphones, despite their low price.

The Bayer DT880 2006 Edition are also very good. I have the DT990 2006 Edition, nice headphones, but not as accurate as the 880.

For comparison, I also use the Sennheiser HD580. Between the three, I can get into the ballpark.

I'll second the AKG 701s

Hi there,

I'd second the 701s by AKG. They're very clear, and you won't have the problem of a too weak bass in your mix. I experienced other headphones to be too bass heavy.
